Visiting the Church of St. Stephen is like stepping back into the 16th century. Go through the door and you’re in a gallery surrounded by the authentic spirit of medieval Orthodox art. The quality of the paintings is quite incredible with vibrant pigments that have stood the test of time. Unfortunately I took my heathen 19 year old that had seen one church too many in Neesebar and my time was cut short by his Kevin and Perry behaviour apparently it wasn’t the Sunny Beach I had promised.

I can see why Church of St Stephen is is an important part of the Balkan Peninsula's cultural heritage and one of world heritage. It is breathtakingly stunning inside.

Super friendly security guy who speaks great English. He even took my photo outside the site. I wish I'd bought my multipass ticket here instead of at the archaeology museum.

Absolutely beautiful frescoes.

The Church of St. Stephen (Bulgarian: църква Свети Стефан) is a former Orthodox Church which has been turned into a museum. It is difficult to determine the exact date of construction (the oldest part probably dates from the 11th century). This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Never miss a historical and magical place. This one is one of these. Come. See. And enjoy. I like all the icons. The style is very attractive. There is pure gold oreols over the head of the saints which are precisely painted. A piece of art. Every figure is unique. Every detail is made with the intention to last forever as an example of an ever lasting faith, truth and wisdom. Try to be part of the place. Feel the peace inside of the temple. There are many temples in Old Nessebar, but this one is one of the most beautiful and my favourite one.

The church is really beautiful and the icons are very good example of the Byzantine unique style. It reminds me of the old church currently is a museum in The Kremikovtsi Monastery near Sofia.

Medieval church with extremely well preserved frescoes and icons. It was built in the 11th century and the frescoes are from the 16th century. The altar is said to be the original from the 16th century.
The church was dedicated to the Mother of God and all the scenes in it are thematically connected with the Mother of God.
