Living Root Bridge is famous for its natural beauty. It is near the Nongbareh and Mawlynnong village in Meghalaya. It is a suspension bridge formed of living plant roots of trees. The way or stairs are not so well constructed. So people having trouble for climbing must not visit this spot. One and half hour is recommended for this spot. Parking and Washrooms are available. Small tea coffee shops, small artisan are also available to purchase.

One of the most dreamy place I have ever visited… just so beautiful and mesmerising.

It has a entry fee for 30 and camera has extra charge.

Where are you go by bus of Meghalaya tourism or private cab both will take you to the same spot eventually where in the left you will have the most clean village in Asia and the right hand side will be the spot now it is not that simple for people who have problems in the knees as it will take around 10 to 15 minutes from the bus port to the main root bridge and stairs are not that short.

If you’re not a nature freak avoid visiting this place in monsoon. The route would be very dangerous, very slippery and full of risky adventures.

This single living root bridge in the process of becoming a double living root bridge is conveniently situated near Kudeng Thymmai village. Accessible through a descent via a staircase and a crossing over a small suspension bridge, it requires an additional 20-minute trek to reach. The bridge offers a stunning view of a waterfall, and crossing it leads to the other side of the village, making for a remarkable experience.

Consider staying in the village, although there's only one homestay available, it's regarded as the best. Ensure accuracy in your plans by double-checking photos and location, as some online uploads may be incorrect. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to explore and stay in the charming village while relishing the beauty of the evolving living root bridge.

A majestic place in the northeast India to be around. Truly one of the best places I've ever visited. The root bridge was so spectacular to witness. It makes you astonished about how good an artist's mother nature can be. Leaving some photographs of the place that I took during my visit. It was like a dreamy wet weather that day. I enjoyed it a lot.

If you go to Meghalaya you should visit here because it is a life time achievement. Amazingly beautiful places while trekking from here one can see beautiful scenery which is usually not possible to see by road or any other means. But It’s not possible for everyone only those who can descend 3500 stairs and climb 3500 stairs will go here. It may be possible to get down but the biggest problem will be during the ascent. And from there is no alternative route except walking.

An essential destination within Shillong, this spot requires a two-hour drive from the city. Upon arrival, consider enlisting a village guide, typically charging around Rs 500. The subsequent 40-minute trek through the jungle provides an invigorating experience. The return journey, involving a climb, varies between 50 to 60 minutes, contingent upon individual physical capabilities. For nature enthusiasts, this venture is an absolute must, offering an unparalleled encounter.

For an optimized itinerary, combine this outing with a visit to Dawki on the same day. To maximize your time, it's advisable to depart early in the morning, around 7-7:30 am. The entire combined excursion should take approximately 8 hours. Opting for a cab is recommended for convenience and ease of travel.

One of its kind in whole Northeast. Quite overcrowded, but the 2-5 minute trekking makes sense to get this aesthetic view of hundreds of years old living Road Bridge. I would suggest everyone to visit.

If you are going this place ,start early . We started trekking at 8 :15 am ,we reached there by 10:15 am. Most of the time while going you will be climbing down stairs. After staying for 30 min then we planned to move ahead till Rainbow falls , where we reached by 12 noon. On the returning you can plan to swim in natural pool which is between rainbow falls and living root bridge .finally we came out around 5:30 evening. Better to hire Guide ,who charges 1000 rupees for rainbow falls and 800 rupees upto living root bridge.

A must visit place in Shillong. It's a two hours drive from Shillong. Once you're there take a guide from village, will charge about Rs 500, it's a 40 minutes trek to the jungle, climbing up on way back will take about 50 to 60 minutes depends on one's physical ability, but it's definitely not to be missed if you're a nature enthusiast. Plan same day alongwith visit to Dawki. Leave early morning around 7-7:30 am in case one plans to visit both places, will take around 8 hours. Recommended take a cab.

The living root bridges are one of Meghalaya’s most beautiful tangible heritage sites. These sites have recently been added to the tentative UNESCO world heritage site list. They are made of intertwined roots which are a sort of magic, but they aren’t imaginary. These bridges have been built for centuries by the indigenous people of the land(Khasis and the Jaintias). They have also been used by these people to cross the overflowing rivers during the monsoon season. Not only is it a naturally built ecosystem of local flora but it also symbolizes the relationship and knowledge that the local people have over their region and the cultural significance that it holds for them. Under ideal conditions, a root bridge is thought to be able to persist for hundreds of years. These bridges frequently rise 50 to 100 feet in the air. The state’s longest living root bridge is said to be a whopping 175 feet in length. There are approximately 100 or so known living root bridges across different villages. Some of the most popular of these living root bridges are in Nongriat, Cherrapunji, Nongbareh and other nearby locations.

Visited the place with family on weekday (18 Apr 2023) around 0300 PM.

A perfect and splendid example of seamless integration between Human Civilization and Mother Nature. A proof of peaceful coexistence with nature and progress of mankind without damaging either of them.

The Living roots of Rubber Tree are more than 150 years old and have been engineered by locals to form a bridge for their daily use.

Adequate parking is available at the location. Refreshments are available at the parking area. We took the route from where walking distance was minimum as per our driver.

There is a second route which requires walking/trekking for more distance.

A place worth visiting and enjoying Mother Nature.

This is certainly going to take your breath away . These bridges are ancient solutions to a perennial problem in rain drenched Meghalaya .

To make a bridge across a stream , a tree of species Ficus elastica [ Indian Rubber tree ] is chosen along one bank .

This tree is known for its profuse aerial roots like the Banyan Tree . Another matching tree on the other bank would be a double delight . Long trunks of the Areca nut palm are cut and allowed to rot till they become hollow tubes .

These tubes are laid across the river and the aerial roots of the ficus plant are encouraged to grow through them till they find soil at the other end . By a slow process taking 15- 20 years aerial roots criss cross and entwine with other climbers to form a bridge which is then paved with stones and earth . The bridges continue to grow stronger with time and there are structures existing that are 600 years old .

Unlike man made bridges , these bridges are weather proof and maintenance free . There are numerous bridges all over Meghalaya but the '' touristy '' ones are near Cherrapunji esp the superstar '' Double Decker '' bridge .

The trek is along forest and village footpaths of moderate difficulty . Expect to pay a small charge to the village Mama where the bridge is located . Be generous ; she will be the one taking the leeches off you with a secret potion once you are done with the bridges ! Just joking ; pull your socks over the trouser bottoms and tie a tight shoelace over them , sprinkle some salt or crushed tobacco to dislodge any leech that manages to get through , keep shifting position constantly like those soccer stars in the penalty box .

That should be enough for the leeches .

It's an engineering marvel. Unbelievable. However the location on google maps is incorrect and if someone follows the usual trail for this place, they might think that the trail is going in a different direction and not getting close to this point. Just trust the trail and the main trail will lead you towards the bridge.
