Great fun exploring on a sunny cold day. Historic mining site for all ages. Areas to explore and walk while also leaning a little about the past.

It’s the reason Castlemaine became a town and this site is one of many examples that brought the crowds to find their bit of gold.

You can pan for gold in the water or just explore the self guided walking areas. Some old rusty bits laying around the open area from the past.

Close to Castlemaine CBD, this place is worth the visit. Lots of history and information here. Picnic area, and if you have kid's lot's of placese to walk and explore. Highly recommended for a stop over in Castlemaine.

We stopped for a quick look but ended up being here for well over an hour. It's a very quiet tourist attraction, we were alone the whole time. If you are fairly interested in the gold rush, engineering and history you will love this. A self guided tour with plenty of fascinating stories and facts to read. There is original machinery, decades or more old to have a look at and even handle - like the massive water pump. Considering this is free and so quiet I would say this is a hidden gem in the area. Certainly worth stopping for. The little maze game was a nice way to end the visit. I would come back again without hesitation! Don't miss this.

An interesting place to visit to look at old mining equipment and walk where many hundreds if not thousands of men have been in search of gold. Only one very faded sign left to tell the story. New signs are badly needed - once they are up this place will be more meaningful. Plenty of parking. There is a labyrinth here that you can walk in. This is free entry.

I wish I'd known about this place earlier, as I've been driving all over the place looking for a running creek or water to pan, and here it is besides the main road - and have since discovered it's a "no prospecting" zone - oh well. I looked up gold prospecting forums which said Forest Ck north of the Monster Meeting plaque, but it is dry as - no water. This site is a good to stop to explore old workings (mainly by hydraulic pressure causing erosion of the surface). It is a bit sad as old equipment has been left to decay, but it is what it is.
