Avenel Cemetery is on the land of Taungurung traditional owners.
This yard is on paved roads in Avenel, with plenty of parking on the side of the road. It is a large flat area with even pathways and well tended short grass, so it doesn't present challenges for people with limited mobility. There are memorials ranging from the 19th century to present day, and the yard is still in use. There is even a memorial plaque for the town's former water tower which was demolished in 1988.
There is not much shade or seating in the yard itself, but it does have a central rotunda to rest in. There are no facilities or drinking water.
Many historical graves are well maintained and in readable condition, and the cemetery also features the grave of John (Red) Kelly, the father of famous Irish-Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.
