If you're thinking, "Why would I do a tour of Katanning - what is there to see?" then all the more reason to book on this tour and find out!
Our guide was Adrian - a true-blue, dyed-in-the-wool, Katanning local lad and he whisked the wife and I off around the town for an hour and a half and we were more than happy with what we got - probably because we didn't really have any expectations being the latte-sipping city dwellers that we are.
Some tours you book you get a well-polished routine from a guide who feels disconnected from the subject matter, rattling off lists of names and dates and you leave the tour thinking you didn't make a personal connection with your guide and you didn't get a feel for the place - its people, culture and its local stories.
Well, this tour wasn't one of those tours!
Yes, we saw some historic buildings, including 'Kobeelya', which Adrian arranged to get unlocked for us to have a look around and we got to hear more of the Frederick Piesse story - a must if you're staying at the Premier Mill Hotel.
A quick phone call to his mate also got the gates to the sheep saleyards open (largest of their kind in the southern hemisphere).
The sites were very interesting. Don't get me wrong - there's no Coliseum or Eiffel Tower in Katanning but there is a bloke called Adrian who is passionate about region and who'll share real-life experiences and stories of the town he grew up in. You won't find anything like it in a guidebook!
