Came across this brand new little gem in Newtown offering authentic Chinese food 👌🏻 extremely well priced for the value and I did indeed go home with a happy belly! The food was delicious, very friendly staff and I imagine they will be super busy once uni starts just down the road. Would totally recommend, and am definitely coming back to try their lunch specials!

There really is an abundance of delicious food in Newtown!
But Chinese restaurants are very rare in Newtown, so I accidentally saw this new Cantonese restaurant when I was passing by on the bus.

I went there before Sydney Lockdown to eat😃.

Although they are not located close to the train station, they are still doing a very good business.
⏰「not open on Wednesday ‼」

I recommend you to try some of their signature dishes and specialties🔥

✅ Fish prawns and squid dumpling (gluten free)
✅ Peking duck- half
✅ Three cup octopus
✅ salted egg yolk prawns
✅Housemade spinach egg tofu
✅ HB signature mushroom bun with custard and egg yolk filling

Happy Belly Chinese Restaurant has opened up on King Street Newtown (Sydney University end) and is serving up some super tasty food, including your favourite Chinese dishes as well as some incredible dumplings! This casual restaurant has a number of tables to dine in and they were also very busy with takeaway. The restaurant has quite an extensive menu and we liked that they had pictures to accompany the description for ease of ordering.

We began with dumplings and these hand made dumplings were incredible. We shared the Chicken and Mushroom Siu Mai - 4 Pieces, the Fish and Prawns Dumplings (GF) - 4 Pieces as well as some crazy food Pan Fried Pork Buns - 6 Pieces! We are sure we’ll return for a few of these. They also have dim sum that are gluten free and vegan to cater for dietary requirements.

For our mains we had the Crispy Shandong Chicken, which was a poached chicken in vinegar and spices and with a crispy skin. In addition we also ordered the Peking Duck Two Ways - which comes with sliced duck with pancakes, shallots and cucumber, in addition to san Choy boy.

We accompanied this with stir fried seasonal Vegetables (VE) with broccoli, capsicum, carrot, Bok Choy and baby corn.

To finish with, we had a sweet popular choice amongst diners - the mushroom buns – dumplings that looks like a mushroom, which, when split results in a custard “lava” and egg yolk filling oozing out. A sweet end to the meal and oh so very tasty.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning.

Reasonable price with Handmade quality Dimsum. Love their signature mushroom bun with custard and egg york filling! They have some vegan options as well. Highly recommend for Fresh prawn wonton noodle. We definitely will come back to try for the other menu!

Thoroughly impressed with how delicious the dim sums here are! There's clearly a lot of thought and attention to detail in each of them. Highly recommend the xiao long bao, siu mai, pork and chives pan fried dumplings and prawn pot stickers! The dumpling skin is superbly thin and the filling is plentiful and flavourful. I'll definitely be back again!

Had already have early dinner but decide to check out this new Chinese restaurant for some dim sum and dessert. Tried the Pork & Chives pot stickers and their signature mushroom bun with custard and egg yolk filling. Love the pot stickers. Crispy base and inside pork and chives is juicy. Their signature mushroom bun came out hot and steamy and upon opening up the custard and egg yolk filling squirt out all over me. lol! Pretty impressed by flowy custard egg yolk filling and the taste. Will definitely be coming back to try more of their other dim sum, noodles and fried rice.

The best affordable Chinese food in Newtown near the Sydney Uni dorm. Their dim sums are delicious and do get their Mushroom Custard Bun.

This new Chinese restaurant has given us excitement and surprise when we dined there. Their dim sums are steamed to perfection with beautiful fillings but what impressed us the most are the awesome aroma and flavours from their dishes such as the Szechuan Spicy Fried Chicken and the Salted Egg Yolk Prawns. For those that are after the traditional Chinese flavours of sweetness and sourness combined, we recommend the Sweet and Sour Eggplant.

With generous portions and a bargain price point for Newtown, this is a place that we would come back again and again.

I came across the little gem of a restaurant accidentally, and I am so happy I did! Newtown is awash in Thai and Vietnamese food options but a really good Chinese restaurant has been hard to find - until now! I've eaten here twice in a week and both meals have been sensational, including from their limited truffle menu. The restaurant decor is unassuming but the quality of the food and depth of the menu surpasses anything in Haymarket or Merivale, fresh, harmonious flavours, perfectly balanced. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

We ordered this on Uber eats tonight because it had one of the better wait times, our food turned up on time and hot. We ordered special fried rice, honey chicken, sweet and sour pork and my husband chose the salt and pepper squid. I am pregnant and had a craving and was ready to be disappointed when you order from some where you haven’t been before but all dishes exceeded expectation and we will return.

An unassuming small Chinese restaurant in the middle of Newtown, but packs a surprise in both taste and price. We ordered a few things and most things are delicious! Highly recommend anything that ends/starts with Salt & Pepper. We had the whole fish (great), 2x servings of fried rice (recommend the olive and seaweed one). After ordering more and more portions and thought we'd definitely be hit with $50/person, suddenly only $30ish pp. Definitely coming back. The service was excellent too, very welcoming and open to provide recommendations.

This place is incredible! I went for my birthday dinner and they made it a really special experience. Staff were really accommodating and friendly with super prompt and attentive service, despite being busy with takeaway orders! There were no mistakes with our (very big) order and the food was so delicious (highly recommend the fish roe, chicken and wasabi salad, the sweet and sour eggplant, and the signature mushroom buns with salted egg yolk custard). I will definitely come back!

I ordered takeaway from Happy Belly tonight and MY GOODNESS 😍😋 the dry noodles with spicy prawns and pork wontons was sooooo gooood. The flavour balance is beautiful and the wontons have a lovely sweet and salty taste to them. Also, I had the mushroom bun for dessert. It is mouthwatering yumminess. The soft custard oozing out the centre with the fluffy bun. I loved it! Such a gorgeous dessert!

There was also this really lovely young lady that offered me the takeaway menu and spoke with me briefly. Would 100% recommend happy belly to others! I'll certainly be back again.

We had such a lovely experience at Happy Belly Restaurant. Great range of food with lots of vege friendly options. Most items on the menu had photos, which was good as you know what to expect, and the food we received looked pretty much identical to these photos. Waiting times were nice and short and staff were friendly. Our favorite was the mixed mushroom dumplings.

The restaurant were so accomdating to our large group that came in at 8pm. We had 16 people and then more people came to join us. Truly a disruption to the night that the restaurant took in stride. We ordered a wide range of food which was just amazing. The BWS is super close and so we definitely BYO. Truly accommodating and really quality food that came out in a good time given how many people and the amount that we ordered.

We came for lunch a couple of weeks ago and everything we had was good. We had the lunch special of sweet and sour pork and it was well executed and not all fat like some places. Beforehand, we had soup dumpling, mushroom dumplings and spring rolls - all excellent! It is also BYO with no corkage - a win win!!!

Really lovely food. The assorted dumpling entree was beautiful to look at and tasty. We had crispy chicken as good as old Happy Chef's. Sweet and sour carved barramundi on next table looked amazing.

Happy Belly, the name is what drew us to this place originally. Their handmade dumplings and pan fried pork buns are to die for, flavoursome on the inside with a crispy bottom. 3 cup chicken was also on point. Great service and clean establishment, will be back for sure.

Happy Belly is a lovely dining experience located in Newtown. It’s a casual dining environment where the food is tasty and the hospitality is nice.

The highlights of the evening were the dumplings that included the Chicken And Mushroom Siu Mai and Fish, Prawns And Squid Dumplings. We also had the Pan Fried Pork Buns which were served piping hot with a juicy pork filling inside.

The Peking Duck (half) was served two ways. The first being the traditional way where gleaming pieces of duck were served with pancakes as well as shallots and cucumbers plus hoi sin sauce. We decided to have San Choy Bau as the second way and were not disappointed. The large lettuce cups were filled to the brim with an excellent duck and vegetable combo.

Overall a very enjoyable experience.
