Hikaru Japanese Courtyard Restaurant

This courtyard Japanese restaurant has been around since the 90s serving up some freshly made, good quality, and no frills Japanese that’s affordable and tastes great.

I’ve been coming over the years and I’ve never been disappointed with the food or service.

The venue itself is a bit old and run down. But the food definitely makes up for it.

Service is sweet and friendly. But there’s no table service, you have to order and pay at the bar.

No complaints though, cause it’s all about the food for me.

Food was great, fresh and tasty. The atmosphere inside is very authentic Japanese, and there are also a couple of seats outside. Prices are fair. You have to go inside to order and pay and the food will be brought to your table.

A small family-owned Japanese restaurant tucked in the alleyway of the busy King Street. There was only two wait staff during peak hours so be aware for long wait times because they were very busy with deliveries. I recommend ordering the dishes all at once and making your way to the counter for quicker service. Most food came after 30-45 minutes after except for the seaweed salad. However I was amazed at the food quality and how generous the servings were. Very delicious and have a homey feel to them. Would definitely come back again.

Hidden jewel of Japanese food. Big portion with very reasonable price. The food tastes amazing and flavorful. The place is kinda small but the vibe is great with great music. The staff is quite limited so make sure to get all your orders prepared when the place is crowded. This place gets all 2 thumbs up from me and is highly recommended to revisit. I think it's my favorite place for japanese food so far

Came here for a dinner with 5 others.

I ordered the Niku (Beef) Udon. The soup was very authentic, with delicious chewy udon noodles. The serving size was decent as well, especially for the $13.80 cost. It was topped with generous amounts of tasty teriyaki beef.

Other members in the group ordered the Katsu Udon and Large Sushi, who enjoyed their dishes as well.

The waiters were helpful, although cooking time was a little long. However, everything else during our visit was very enjoyable!

The restaurant doesn’t looks beautiful but the food is beautiful.
It tastes really nice and the portion is big for not too high price.
The niku udon comes with a lot meat.

This place can be easily overlooked as it's bit hidden in side lane but that's what gives it nice calming vibe out of the rush of the main street. Staff is nice and helpful. Many wonderful dishes to choose from, but I've got a feeling you can't go wrong with any choice.

The restaurant may look less attractive compare to other restaurant but the quality of the food has been the main reason for me to come back. I feel like eating everything from this place 🥰 sushi and sashimi were very fresh, caparcio was very tasty. Tempura was very good (I forgot to take photo 🤣)

A nice place to eat sushi with reasonable price. The shop has good decoration. The signature sushi roll dishes worth trying with cheap price (around $10 - $14) but not very special. We also ordered the yakisoba and it is much better than expected but the portion is quite small. The staffs are friendly. There's a minimum $25 if you want to pay by card so better to use cash. Can easily access by public transport since the bus stop is just 100m away.

Everyone reading my reviews knows that I love Japanese food, and that I miss traveling to Japan... Hikaru didn’t disappoint. They offer simple yet tasty Japanese dishes at a very reasonable price. We had tempura and sushi, all very delicious, with a nice glass of sparkling umeshu. Highly recommended.

My partner and I stumbled upon Hikaru unexpectedly when we were visiting Newtown last October. Hands down the best Japanese we have both ever had. The food was fresh, simple, and so delicious. We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Sydney.

Our go to place for Japanese food in Newtown. Must've gone there 10+ times this year to eat in. Opens at 5 and fills up pretty quickly. Lots to choose from on the menu with beverages including beer, wine and sake. Usually order 5-6 things from the menu , a beer ,wine and a lrg sake. Usually comes to $70-$80 for the both of us.

This place is a perfect go to if you want a quick meal at a reasonable price. It's right in the heart of Newtown, the food is delicious and even if you go hog wild it's going to be a reasonable cost per person. The chicken Katsu Don was delicious and the sushi is something to die for. I recommend this place for a quick bite

The food was great. It came out really quickly. Reduced their staffing due to covid so it would’ve been very reasonable if the food took time to arrive. Plenty of parking in nearby backstreets. Decent pricing

Hikaru is the perfect spot for an affordable date night or dinner with friends. BYO, great food and again so affordable. Not many of these gems left and we have to cherish them! Love Hikaru!

I haven’t been to this place for such a very long time.
Food always good, fresh and delicious.
I ordered Wagyu with sweet miso, it was good, but to my palate miso was touch to sweet and masking the taste of Wagyu.
It was delicious dish, but I prefer less of those sweet miso.
My chicken yakisoba was good too.
Sauce was just enough to coat all the fried noodle, without drenching the noodle.
Chicken was tender and tasty!
Overall it was a good dinner.
