The hospitality is fantastic, with evening meals in front of the open fire. Well laid out day walks with plenty of opportunities to observe local birds.

Great place to visit and stay. Worth the effort over the rough road and sandy track.4WD ONLY.

It's a 30km deviation from the highway but Isolation and solitude are available in droves here. The walks are spectacular and take your binoculars. We managed to see a bustard cross the track on the way in. They are common but it's the first one I have seen in the wild.
Friendly volunteer Rangers. Need a high clearance 4wd to negotiate the sand hills on the way in and also need to deflate your tyres and carry a radio.

This historic place is a wonderful testament to the work of volunteers. Very much off the beaten track it's well worth the drive off the Eyre Highway but you must have a competent four wheel drive. The old telegraph station has a wonderful vibe, and is perfect for children to learn about WA history, wildlife and preserving the environment. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful place 1km from the Southern Ocean. The volunteers showed us around and told us the history of the centre from telegraph station to bird observatory. It would be good to do a course there for a week. Lots of birds and very restful.

We stayed at the Observatory for two nights - we were the only guests at the time - and it rates as one of the highlights of our drive across the southern edge of Australia. The Observatory is maintained by volunteers, who sign up to be caretakers, bird enumerators, weather reporters, and hosts for stretches of several months at a time. I’m sure that the quality of the hosts during your visit can affect your stay, but we lucked out with a splendid couple who let us accompany them on bird counts, took us to outlying sites, made hearty, satisfying meals, and were wonderful cheerful companions. This is a unique place to visit - about as far from the “outside world” as possible while still enjoying comfort. Your visit helps support the work of Birds Australia and your time at the Observatory provides a glimpse into what the lives of the telegraph operators who lived and worked here must have been like.

I've had the pleasure of staying at Eyre Bird Observatory on three occasions and it is still my favourite place I have ever had the pleasure and fortune to visit. So isolated and remote, with a serene landscape and incredible history, not to mention incredible bird, reptile and mammal fauna. Can't wait to return!!
