Thornbury Picture House

Folks who really understand the cinema experience. The staff are always lovely. There's a good mix of films on, including past films. It's also a really lovely aesthetic. I feel like I'm being welcomed into a space that wants me there and to enjoy the film. It's very easy to make a night of if it as well, with a bunch of lovely restaurants around.

A small, cozy, friendly cinema. I don't usually see general releases here because I prefer bigger screens and louder speakers for that experience but they have a really varied program with a lot of special features you wouldn't see anywhere else. I've seen some awesome music films and docos here. Plus they have unbelievably delicious vegan choc tops from The Toddy Shop.

We had our wedding here in May 2023 and it was absolutely amazing! the staff were great and the venue is beautiful. They were so accomodating with letting us play some things on the movie screen and using their Lightbox out the front. they even (literally) rolled out the red carpet for us. Having our wedding at our favourite cinema was so special, also, everyone loved having popcorn with their bubbles after the ceremony.

Wonderful cinema with a great selection of films, lovely staff and great atmosphere. Gus the owner is also a super lovely guy. 5 stars

Always fun. Stuff are always chill. Great ‘local’ experience. So much more enjoyable than heading to a megaplex at a shopping centre.

TPH is a jewel of the north. As a local I feel fortunate to have this place on our doorstep. Cinema space is incredible and a drink out front is a vibe. Thanks to the owners for hanging tough during the hard times!

Fantastic films, great selection of drinks and exciting special events. A cornerstone of Thornbury’s cultural scene and the Melbourne film scene more broadly. I can't wait to go back and sit in those comfy seats and enjoy a cocktail and some arthouse cinema with likeminded people. Gus and Lou have done a tremendous job at pulling off the seemingly impossible task of running an independent 1 screen cinema that has all the perks of a cashed up multiplex (high quality cinema seats, crystal clear projected image and phenomenal 5.1 surround sound) but all of the charm of a local small business. A miracle that all should acknowledge and celebrate. Viva TPH!

Best cinema cocktail place you can go to. I highly recommend to have some popcorns and the signature sangria.

How do you make a great local cinema perfect? Just add a Four Pillars Gin bartender to make your cocktails for you! I think the elaborate gin cocktails may be a limited promotion, but the Thornbury Picture House is well worth your patronage even without a dedicated bartender. The friendliness of the staff and their keenness to look after you makes this place feel like a beloved neighbourhood bar rather than a cinema. The fit out in this former very old petrol station (circa 1930s-40s style?) is art deco smart with some very nice vintage camera pieces and film photography. I wonder if we can just use the for as a bar even if we're not seeing a film 🧐. I want to be a regular here!

Excellent experience. Small theatre - and well stocked bar - with the most roomy and comfy theatre seats.

Attention to detail to recreate a boutique picture house is outstanding. Good choc top range a must and TPH delivers. Comfy seats (not reclining but keeps to the traditional re-creation) and selection of films means there's always something to watch. Good location with plenty of on street parking available after hours.

Love this place! So nice to come for a pre-movie wine or cocktail. The wine selection is always unique and the choc bombs are tasty af. I had a vegan one and it blew my mind. Most importantly the staff are super friendly. :)

Great facilities and curation of movies!

Cozy, intimate movie theatre with cheap Mondays. They serve fresh, hot popcorn, booze and vegan ice cream in a super lovely ambience. I love coming here

Quite simply the BEST cinema in Thornbury! Not only do they show incredible pictures sourced form all four corners of the globe, but you can watch them with a delicious cocktail in hand! A truely lovely, family run cinema and an import part of the community. Thank you Thornbury Picture House, I will be back soon!

This is a gem in Thornbury! We went to see Elvis tonight and it was fab. The bar area outside was a great spot to have some delicious snacks from Umbertos before the movie. Gus was amazing and went above and beyond to make sure we were fed on time. Such lovely staff and atmosphere. A great experience all round! Will definitely be back.

Cutest cinema out there, love the film selection, the drinks and ability to order special food from the locally partnered restaurants. Such an enjoyable atmosphere!

Update: just thought it would be helpful for punters to know that while you can order delicious antipasti from nearby to be brought to the cinema, you can't eat the food inside the cinema, you need to eat it at the bar area.
