Built as the Huntly Shire Council Chambers in 1867, the Lombardic-arched hall was designed by local engineer, John O’Dwyer. Huntly Shire, on the Midland Highway on the NE outskirts of Bendigo (and now part of Greater Bendigo), was formed in 1866, and these chambers used for 110 years until 1977.

To quote the Victorian Heritage Council:
“The former Huntly Shire Chambers... is of architectural importance as an unusual example of an engineer designed council chambers with many interesting design elements, including the banded brickwork, overall scale of the building and loggia. The arcade on the eastern facade is a good example of fine engineered brickwork with two levels of arches. The building is substantially intact both internally and externally.”

Even with steel rods and plates now providing support, the appeal of the building remains.
