Nanna’s Place has a strong community reputation for wonderful, honest and traditionally authentic Maltese cuisine. And I’m so pleased it lives up to its reputation.

From the moment you step into the quaint restaurant you’re greeted with open arms and there’s a sense on nostalgia. For me, it’s just like my grandparents house back in the 80s. There’s photos, flags and Maltese trinkets on all the walls. Susan, her name embroidered on her apron, is one of the owners who walks you through the menu and the daily specials.

Let it be known, everything on that menu just sounded amazing and I wanted to order it all. I started with the humble pastizzi. The pastizzi is a traditional Maltese pastry that consists of flaky, thin pastry filled with various savoury fillings. Today it’s ricotta cheese or mashed peas. Naturally, I order both. This was followed by the lay down misère food train we experienced including ricotta ravioli with a tomato based sauce and generous sprinkling of Parmesan. The chicken bragioli was stuffed and rolled with a filling of a mixture of herbs, garlic, cheese and capsicum. The gnocchi was light and fluffy with tomato based sauce with you could soak up with table bread. For me the Maltese highlight was not yet on the specials menu, beef mince stuffed qarabalii served with a side oven baked potatoes - just like Nana would make. You can order up at Nana’s Place as what you don’t eat you can take home for later on. This little restaurant is a great find and I’d strongly encourage you to experience it.

Were you addicted to pastizzi as a kid? Did your Nanna make you pudina as a child? Miss your Nonni? All you need to do is open the door and you are hit first by the aroma and secondly by the love. This place is family run and it just feels like home. On top of all that, the food is fricken AMAZING. They even offer frozen platters so we can experience the pleasure of their food at home! 🤤 I can't wait to go back.

Great food with super friendly owners.

We had been meaning to drop in for some time, and today was the day! We had a quiet Saturday lunch starting with a pastizzi each, crispy pastry and balanced nicely with tasty filling.

My wife had the gnocchi special, which was a simple cream and napolitana sauce complimenting the pillowy gnocchi. The flavour was delicious and went down a treat. I had the rabbit stew and spaghetti. The rabbit was tasty and not too gamey, the stew was tomato based with the usual selection of good stew veggies.

I had a Kinnie as well, which is like a chinotto, to wash it all down.

The owner also let us try one of their donnoli, a combo donut cannoli dessert with vanilla custard. The perfect little bite size to finish with.

Early lunch @TheMaltesePastizziBar where I chose Stuffat tal Fenek - rabbit stew served with spaghetti and fresh bread

A generous dish is placed piled with spaghetti and plenty of tender succulent rabbit immersed in a delicious tomato based sauce. Use the soft fresh bread to mop up all the tomato based sauce of the stew. Potatoes adorn the plate amongst the herbs and makes for a hearty meal. Very enjoyable and so full. I couldn't leave without getting frozen pastizzi and picking a number of sweet and savoury items from the display cabinet.

Some of the items are a pastry surrounding a smooth date mixture which is delicious (honey ring which is cold and imqurat which is deep fried). The qasatat is a savoury pastry holding a delicious chicken mixture. The mini figoli is a large soft biscuit encasing a smooth almond filling which is very tasty. Pudina is a soft chocolate bread pudding with dried fruit and is perfect as an afternoon snack. Cbneit is a Maltese cheese so I chose the pepper marinated version which has some bite but is perfect to break up in a salad. And as for the psstizzi, pop in them oven and out pop golden brown flaky pastry surrounding a smooth ricotta filling. These are so yum you just can't stop eating them.

Absolutely blown away by the service and food at this restaurant. I haven’t eaten food like this since I was in Malta last! The ambience made me literally feel like I was at my nanna and nannu’s house. The owners went over and above to make our night perfect. Beef bragioli to absolutely die for and cannolis I could only dream about!

Went to The Maltese Pastizzi Bar and Restaurant with work colleagues. We loved the food, atmosphere and friendly service. In fact we loved the pastzzi so much that we called the next day to order some for work. The owner was so nice that he gave us complementary Donnli to taste, a dessert that is absolutely delicious. If you are ever in the area you definitely need to stop as you will not be disappointed.

My father and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Nanna’s place at the Maltese Pastizzi Bar and Restaurant. Susan made us feel welcome the moment we walked through the door and was a fabulous host. Every dish was full of flavour, generous serves and clearly made with love. We had the seafood pasta with kapunata sauce, hobz biz zejt, Maltese bread washed down with a Kinnie and Cisk. Dessert was delicious imqaret and donolli to die for! Loved the special touch of a Maltese cross on the cappuccino 😊 We bought some homemade pastizzi to take away. Highly recommend trying this little slice of Malta in Melbourne.
