A historic town with some ruins and also a lodging in one of the buildings. The prison is quarter the size of what we got today. Although it said that it opens at 9am on google maps, it wasn’t unfortunately. There’s a cafe but was also closed. Definitely doesn’t open on Sundays now as I’ve been here previously when they had the markets event.

Lovely lady & gentleman were very informative. The Gents toilet was extremely clean & the gentleman had just cleaned the area. It looked brand new, initially I thought he was a plumber installing a new toilet. Ample hand wash, paper hand towels & hot water. The Museum was full of a variety of Art works. My wife purchased a necklace & I purchased a top.
Thank you so much for a lovely stop.
Regards Frank & Sue.

Cossack is an interesting town with a storied history mostly based on the pearl diving industry which started in this area but re-centred around Broome when the pearl banks became depleted.

The courthouse is one of the more attractive buildings that remained standing in Cossack despite the destructive nature of past cyclones and when the town was abandoned in the 1950's.

The courthouse is now being used as a museum which is well worth a gander.

At the mouth of the Harding River, about 20 minutes east of Karratha there’s an enthralling ghost town with a few bluestone buildings still standing despite 150 years of cyclones.

In the 1870s Cossack the North West’s main shipping port, and a lively base for the gold and pearling industries.

There was even a Chinatown here because of the high number of Chinese and Japanese people working in pearling.

But by the mid-1880s those pearl banks were depleted and the industry moved on.

Now you can trace Cossack’s swift rise and fall on a five-kilometre heritage trail (walk or drive), showing off the region’s oldest architecture at eight fully restored buildings and fields of eerie ruins

Free, interesting collection, well laid out & comprehensive. A little off the beaten track, hot & there were many flies. A good stop for the explorers amongst us.
