Houhai Dumpling House

I've lived in the area for years and walked past this place thinking wowowow what could this be. Ventured in tonight and had the best dumps I've ever had. Every post meal burp is a treat. Go there and eat dumplings or don't - I hope you choose the latter - all the more for me!

Very authentic northern China style food at really good prices.

The boss is from Beijing, and the food definitely reflects that. We only had the dumplings and a cabbage salad this time but will be back to try the other dishes.

The dumpling skins are made by hand and are exactly the way they should be, and the stuffing authentic flavours.

Have a cold Tsingtao and a couple of plates of dumplings out the front!

Does anyone know why they're temporarily closed?! (May 12th 2024) Best dumplings and spicy noodles in the bloody world. Help, I need my fix.

Best Chinese food in Melbourne. The decor and general vibe are truly iconic - we must protect this establishment at all costs!! The depth and complexity of flavours was BEYOND any other Chinese restaurant I’ve ever tried in my life. The man who runs the place is so nice!! We are obsessed and will be back again and again.

My favourite dumpling house in melb. Always bustling and warm. The food takes a little while but I think it gives you time to take in the atmosphere of the place, I think it's really special. I love this place and have taken all my out of city friends straight here.

This place is awesome!! Charming decor, friendly service, and so affordable too – $8.50 for 10 dumplings! The mushroom & boc choy ones are amazing ♡

We've been meaning to come here for a while and finally did it. Why did we wait so long?! The food was SO GOOD, so tasty. And cheap! The dumpling wrappers were such a beautiful texture and the prawn and ginger stuffing was so fresh. We also had a tofu, Sichuan pepper, chili stir fry, then the black fungus, cabbage, carrot noodles. My partner also then insisted on sweet & sour pork. This was far too much food for 2 people but we were happy to have left overs for the next few days, and had trouble stopping when we were full on account of how damn tasty it a was. Authentic, non-pretentious, affordable, delicious, hidden gem. 10/10 would recommend. I would agree with the other reviews that say, come with no time constraints - there are only 2 people working so it takes a touch longer to place your order but so worth the small wait.

I’m a big fan of dumplings, sometimes even make them myself. So trust me when I say that those are some really good dumplings!
Will definitely return here.

This place is a wild and wonderful experience…
The food is amazing some of the best dumplings in Melbourne hands down.
The only thing is you have to come in with time on your side, it seems to a two person operation so getting a order in takes time and so does the food but just relax it is all worth it in the end!
Also it is so cheep it doesn’t even make sense.

Houhai Dumpling House is our old faithful dumpling house for 8+ years. Authentic, reliable and of course - delicious. We’ve tried dumplings the world over but keep coming back here, for a reason! (Pork with Chinese chives, beef with leek and onion).

Delicious 😍 I had ginger prawn pan fried dumplings, beef and broccoli pan fried dumplings and Chinese broccoli with minced garlic - honestly best experience ever!!!! Ginger prawns were so good, big chunky prawns and the Chinese broccoli sauce was so flavourful.. DELICIOUS

Tasty authentic Chinese food, generous portions in an unpretentious atmosphere with friendly service! Very reasonably priced! Best of all we did not have an upset stomach the next day 👍🏻

Best dumplings in the world

Proper proper good dumplings! Our favourite ones are easily the prawn and ginger ones. The home made chilli sauce is to die for. This place is gem throwing out some authentic Chinese food. We usually get takeaways but you can dine in!

Great dumplings, ridiculously good value for money. Had a range of dishes including a few dumpling dishes. Walked away happy and full. I honestly wouldn’t be offended if they raised their prices a bit! Love it!

27 Oct 2022, our favourite dumpling house may be closed for a few months due to chef going overseas. See photo just uploaded. Great dumplings and good fresh noodle dishes. I had the Beijing noodles and prawn with ginger dumplings, pan fried. Good prices too. The food is tasty and the staff are pleasant. My favorite is the beef and carrot dumpling.

Currently closed until further notice. Hope they will come back!
