Gaijin Japanese Fusion

I recently revisited Gaijin Japanese Fusion in South Yarra for dinner and it was just as good as I remember.

We ordered to share the Dragon vs tiger sushi roll, Crispy soft shell crab, Vegetable tempura, Cheesy gyoza and Black sesame panna cotta for dessert.

Everything we ordered was full of flavour. The cheesy gyoza was the highlight, the gooey soft texture was a nice contrast to the crispy tempura and soft shell crab dishes. I also recommend trying the dessert. The black sesame panna cotta served with black sesame ice cream was lovely. With a beautiful nutty flavour I liked that it was refreshing and not overly sweet.

For Japanese food with a fusion twist I recommend checking out Gaijin.

I recently had a great dinner at Gaijin Japanese Fusion. We ordered to share the sushi & sashimi combo, cheesy gyoza and salmon tartare.

The sushi & sashimi combo features assorted sushi, mixed nigiri and a side potion of salmon salad and is served with miso soup. Everything on the plate was so fresh and I thought it was great value for $35.

I was surprised how well the cheese worked with the seafood gyoza. Somehow the combination works and I found the cheesy gyoza to be quite delicious. If you love cheese I recommend giving it a try.

The salmon tartare was another lovely dish. The minced salmon and Nori tempura crisp worked together beautifully and had a nice contrast in textures.

Overall I had an enjoyable evening at Gaijin Japanese Fusion. The restaurant was busy and had a great atmosphere, the menu is extensive with plenty of options including all you can eat, and the food was fresh and delicious. I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Thanks very much for having me.

Amazing food, great prices and lovely service!

Came here on Valentine's Day for a romantic dinner. My partner and I splurged and ordered lots of food. Every single dish was worth it! The sushi and sashimi was tasty and fresh, which was the theme for all the meals. If you're looking for a tasty and affordable meal, served to a high quality, I would definitely recommend Gaijin!

The sashimi was an absolute highlight - it was incredibly fresh and we loved the smooth texture. We also loved the unique flavours of each dish, especially the gyu tataki and spicy salmon don. We highly recommend this restaurant for your next dinner spot!

Went to Gaijin to try out their new brunch menu. Japanese, Indonesian and Filipino inspired brunch dishes which was a welcome twist to your regular brunch places.

We ordered the Nasi Goreng with a twist, Crispy Rice Waffle with Salmon, and the Sisig Nori Chips. Everything was full of flavour and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Would definitely come back again.

As a lover of this restaurants dinner menu I was super keen to check out their new brunch menu and it did not disappoint. I got the mango roce paper rolls which were super fresh, chicken katsu curry but with salad which a nice lite alternative to usual rice and also checked out their drinks and dessert menu which had plenty of options available too. Would highly reccomend checking out their brunch on a weekend if you get a chance. Plus all their meats are halal too so I always feel spoiled for choice when I go here. 🙏😊👌

We were craving Japanese on a Saturday morning and explored Gaijin and oh boy it was a feast!🤩 Located on the bustling streets of South Yarra, Gaijin Japanese is all about fusion food at its best. Our favourites from the brunch menu were-
Crispy Sizzling Tofu (Fried tofu cubes with chill pepper, onion and Gaijin special mayo accompanied with crispy crackers), Pancit Yakisoba (Filipino style noodles with vegetables and agedashi tofu pieces) and the Halo Halo Roll (Fried halo halo spring roll served with red bean ice cream, drizzled with ube syprup).
Gaijin hits the right spot with their flavours, elaborate menu, chic ambience and hospitality. Must explore!

I think I’m in a sushi heaven now 🤤
Their Tasmanian sushi rolls are to die for, very delicious! This one is a must order

They have a new menu called ‘Volcano salad’ $16 (it’s not on their menu book yet but you can order it). It consists of seaweed and crab stick salad with fresh salmon sashimi cuts and tempura crunch. It was pretty good 😋 worth to try! Their sashimi also great and fresh

Came in with a few mates tonight and this place has really caught me by surprise - fast and friendly service and food that's absolutely unrivaled. We went for the sushi + sashimi buffet and I honestly expected average food at best in an attempt to cut costs. Never have I been this excited to be so wrong - each plate was beautifully decorated, superbly fresh and mouth watering with exciting ingredient combinations I have not tried anywhere else.

I feel the best endorsement one can give does not consist of a string of compliments but repeated business and Gaijin will most certainly be getting more of my personal as we my family and friends' business in the immediate future.

Best modern Japanese food in Melbourne!!!

I am a big fan of sushi and I would literally travel a 1000 miles to have a good plate of sushi. @gaijinmelbourne does amazing sushi, they have a full menu of sushi selection.

I tried a platter ($30) so was able to try 4 different types of sushi
Personal favourite was the Tasmanian roll. Definitely try that!!!

We also had the bibimap ($20) and seared scallops ($12)

I have been coming to Gaijin for 15 years (since they opened), it is probably one of the best sushi restaurants we’ve tried in Melbourne when it comes to sushi rolls, the service is really good. Additionally, I recommend the black sesame panacota, if you want to try a dessert.

I has a wonderful night at Gaijin, with my Mum and sister. The sushi and sashimi platters are a must try, and did not disappoint. I highly recommend if you’re looking for delicious Japanese fusion cuisine in South Yarra.

Amazing food! Nice little sushi place just off chapel with a few parking spaces out front. Inside lovely setting and great service. Sushi is made to order (had all you can eat) and the quality was remarkable and had a large selection fish vegetable and meat sushi rolls. 10/10

To the people who says in their review that “the food take ages to come out”: Well lovely people, if you want fresh food, made on the spot for you, it takes the time that it takes! Otherwise go to a fast food!

Update June 2021:
Went here for my birthday as I love what they do so much and also wanted to support them after all the lockdowns... The sushi was sensational (really as good as the pictures look) and most of the dishes taste absolutely amazing HOWEVER the wait for each dish to arrive was really unacceptable and the sashimi looked really depressing. Can't reduce the stars as overall I love this place and I want them to do well, hopefully better next time...

This place is amazing food, amazing vibes, amazing service and an amazing location too ! I have not yet tried a curry chicken udon and it was so yummy.

All you can eat sushi and sashimi $50 Monday - Thursday is awesome. The rolls are the best in Melbourne. Drinks menu needs work but you can BYO. Have also had the soft shell crab as a dish and it is delicious and generous portion.

Delicious and fresh! Loved the Ahi Tuna, Crunchy Spicy Tuna and Melbourne roll! The Dragon vs Tiger roll was also surprisingly good (considering I’m not a fan of Unagi/eel). My husband also loves the Baked Dynamite. The fried rice was also great. The half serves of sushi is also a great way to try more different types of sushi!
