Thai Pothong Restaurant

Food- Delicious and generous portions. Family thought some of the dishes were the best Thai flavour they have enjoyed in Sydney so far.

Service- Delightful and quick. We arrived there on a stormy night and the restaurant was packed and we didn’t have a booking but were seated within 10-15 minutes. It was a Tuesday night and the place was still packed, highly recommended booking in advance if you plan to go during the weekend.

Atmosphere- Busy, but welcoming. They have beautiful and some perhaps Thai culture associated artworks, displayed all over the restaurant. You can purchase them too if you want.
They also have a large collection of metal artwork of various Marvel, DC, Transformers and other characters. It’s quite the attraction to even for adults 😀

I would recommend for groups however I’d steer away for a date night or a romantic dinner only due to the noise. It’s a little difficult to have a quiet conversation.
Overall we had a great dinner here.

This place serves delicious Thai food in a big, nicely decorated space. The Pad Thai is really tasty, with just the right seasoning. It's a bit pricey at $25 per serving, and there's a minimum order of $25 per person. Service is good Nd extremely fast but maybe it’s because the place wasn’t so crowded. Definitely worth trying!

I came here for dinner with my family. Overall an excellent restaurant in a very large space. I would recommend making reservations beforehand. We did that at around 4:00 p.m. for dinner at a 6:30 p.m. The place filled up very quickly and there were multiple large birthday parties that evening. The dishes were very flavorful with the perfect combination of sweet/sour/spicy/umami flavours that one would expect to find in traditional Thai food. The grilled lamb and banana blossom salad were a hit within our group!

Food portions are appropriate given the prices. Ordered steam rice on the side. I would return to this establishment in a heartbeat!

This place has a fantastic atmosphere. We ordered a few entrees and mains. The highlight was the chicken satay and stuffed chicken wings. Although I’d probably get the main size for the Tom Yum next time as the entree size is literally just a small bowl. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back!

Throughly enjoyed our experience, everything was served fresh and tasted amazing. Staff were friendly. Dinning is capped at 1 1/2 hours and you are told this when being lead to your table. Plenty of on street parking but being Newtown it can get very busy on weekends. Bookings are recommended, otherwise be prepared to wait.

A staple Thai restaurant that’s been around for decades. We haven’t dined here in years and coming back it’s just as good as before. Quite a large restaurant with a rich interior. Food tastes great though some dishes can be a little too sweet for our taste. They have great kids set for $14 and the portion is massive!

Our server Alex and Oat was the best server.

We had a wonderful lunch in this beautiful Thai restaurant recently. The Thai food tasted delicious and looked so beautiful. It’s so great to sit in surrounded by beautiful decoration. The celebration of one of us’ birthday was unforgettable. The restaurant provided the celebrant with a complimentary ice cream desert, and a gift of tea cup. Some staff sang a birthday song with us together, one of the staff took some wonderful birthday celebration photos for us. It really made our day.

We much appreciate for the excellent service and efforts that the restaurant provided. We will definitely visit again and highly recommend it to our friends and colleagues.

My second visit to Thai Pothong confirmed it’s the best Thai spot in Sydney. Unlike my first visit, which was a bustling scene at 9:30 PM, I booked ahead for 5:30 PM this time. The service is warm and quick, and the food is outstanding. Their unique cocktails are a must-try. Highly recommend for an authentic Thai experience.

Upon entering the establishment, the staff members greeted us with utmost friendliness and respect. The service provided was exceptional, and the culinary experience was one of the finest I have had in Thai cuisine. I highly recommend this establishment and intend to revisit in the future.

Absolutely love, love, love this place. Been coming here for 10 years. I’ve introduced everyone I know here, from family to friends to partners. The service is always so lovely and kind, and the waiters are great to have a hearty chat with! They are also super accommodating towards requests. Highly recommend the massaman curry, betel leaf prawns, pad see ew (best pad see ew I’ve ever had), as well as bbq pork. For cocktail, mango sticky rice cocktail is phenomenal

Favourite Thai cuisine in Australia. Atmosphere is great. Very friendly staff. Highly recommend the Coconut Seafood and Lychee Duck Curry. Hard to find parking but will worth it. 2min talking from Newtown Station so you can either bus it or train it.

By far one of the best Thai restaurants I have ever eaten at. I ordered the chilli barramundi with a side of coconut rice. The dish was amazing. Creamy, sweet and spicy. Great portions with great service. Others at my table at the massaman beef curry, pork belly cashew chicken and basil barramundi which they all gave positive feed back on. Please note it is best to have a bookings to warrant a seat..

Edit - I came back and ordered the barra again, still tasty. Ordered some satay sticks for entrees, juicy and sweet. The Massaman curry tasted nice, it wasn't powerful but pleasant.

Note - seems like there are more kids here on a Saturday so if you want less kaos, perhaps dine on a school night.

We have been going to Thai Pothong for over 12 years now. Delicious well priced fresh Thai food. An extensive large menu with lots of options. Beautiful presentation and efficient friendly service. Nick always looks after us. I highly recommend!

Some of the best dishes are the Ginger Scallops, Chilli Scallops, Vegetarian Chicken & Cashew Nut, Betal Leaf Prawns, Fish Cakes, Curry Puffs.

Things that could be improved - it would be great if they got rid of those Transformers statues in the entrance (they are not Thai decorations), and it also would be great if they had new seasonal special dishes on the menu each season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) so regulars can get something new and different from the menu.

This place is amazing! The food was really tasty and had great portion sizes. The waitstaff were all extremely friendly and attentive. We went here for my birthday and they went above and beyond to make me feel special. Very reasonably priced also. Lovely homely atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Always a bit sceptical when you look online and see "Sydney's Best (insert cuisine here) Restaurant". However, in @thaipothongrestaurant 's case in Newtown, they certainly have a good argument that they are. Absolutely aroy! (Delicious!) Lovely decor too. Definitely worth seeking out for exceptionally tasty Thai treats! Service was so friendly and made you feel very welcome. What a great place!

No wonder this is always busy, food is good spicy is ‘literally thai spicy!’ Service is amazing! All staff is smiling all night long. i even saw them celeberating people birthday 6times in 2 hours😂 they initiate to take a picture for the birthday person. Oh i surprise that they put a napkin on my lap, thought that i was in fine dining restaurant! Cute rice pot as well!☺♥

First time I went to Thai Pothong was back to 2002. Beautiful restaurant with gift shop impressed me by authenticity of the food, nice decorations, unique gifts and friendly staff. When I came to live in Sydney in 2018, I wanted to go back to see that nice restaurant again.
I found it more beautiful then 2002. We’ve became regular customers here since 2018. Many staff know us and they are very nice with us.
Recently we had my birthday dinner here. They gave me a gift with a lovely tea cup wrapped in special handmade paper and took photo of us, put in frame and sent digital pictures to us with birthday wishes. Such thoughtful gifts really made my day.
Highly recommend this restaurant to all who love Thai food. I’m sure you will like it.

Always a fantastic meal, staff are incredibly welcoming. The food has so much flavour and are good portion sizes. Must do if you like Thai cuisine
