My Wife Jackie and I stayed 2 nights in May at "The Cally"and cannot sing its praises enough. The hosts Hugh and Barb were very gracious and the Yellow Room we stayed in was just perfect Hugh was very good with his expert advice with all things Broken Hill and his porridge was very well accepted by Jackie as he makes it with Murray River salt which apparently makes it so good. Hugh & Barb also have 4 cottages that they let out so these two people are certainly kept on their toes all in all wonderful place to stay in Broken Hill Thank You Hugh & Barb very much.

Once again up to Broken Hill for the St Pat's Races and this time Barb and Hugh ( the ever welcoming Host's ) put us up in one of their self contained cottages " Blue Wren" Once a miners home, it has a wonderful warm feel to it with all the Mod cons . The Caledonian Breakfast is not to be missed, and the large communal table is a great way to connect to other outback visitors. We come back each year to the Caledonian because simply this is outback hospitality at its best.

Great stay at the well-equipped Lavender and Lace Cottage. We particularly enjoyed the lovely large kitchen and dining area, and time sitting in the back garden to catch some winter afternoon sun. Hugh and Barb were very welcoming, going out of their way to provide any help we asked for. The Cally B&B looked nice too. We had 4 nights in Broken Hill and could happily have stayed for longer.

Simply the best B & B in Broken Hill. Hosts Barb and Hugh couldn't have done any more to make my stay as comfortable as possible. The rooms are so quiet with crisp white linen and the softest towels, all are luxuries I'm not used to, so I just lapped it up. The hot breakfast was just so yum!!
It ticks my boxes; Friendly, Clean, Quiet, Comfortable and it's not expensive.
I think the place is great.

A delightful stay in very comfortable accommodation, warm (it was mid winter - air con works beautifully), friendly and with wonderful decor. Coffee that ranks as 5/5! (home brewed), home made marmalade and anzac biscuits! We didn't have a cooked breakfast and now after reading other reviews and enjoying the biscuits, the coffee and marmalade, I'm sorry we didn't! AND, the most comfortable bed. with quality linen we had slept in on a 2 week touring holiday.
Hugh and Barbara are the perfect hosts. Knowledgeable about their area and interesting without being intrusive at all.
A very lucky find for us and a highlight on our travels.

We discovered The Cally B&B by lucky chance as we sped towards Broken Hill from Sydney. Barb took our booking, warned us about the 'roos on the road at sunset, and welcomed us into the warmth of The Caledonian on a cold winter's night in July. We were very snug in the Yellow Room and extended our stay to three nights to give ourselves more time to explore the treasures of Broken Hill, Silverton, and Daydream Mine. Located centrally in town, we left the car in the secure back garden, and did most of our wandering around Broken Hill by foot. Hugh's website is a good reflection of the excellent hospitality to be found at The Cally and we were very impressed by his special breakfasts.

We stayed for five nights in the well appointed and excellent value for money, Blue Wren Cottage.Hugh greeted us warmly at the Tourist Bureau late on a bitterly cold night and transferred us to the cottage. The cottage was already warm as the heater had been turned on. Inside the first thing we noticed was a big basket of goodies, loaf of bread, butter, cereal, dozen eggs, milk. The whole cottage is furnished like a home away from home. The queen beds were very comfortable and warm with option of electric blankets. Do try Hugh’s breakfast, it is a must – you will not be disappointed. Hugh returned us to the station when we reluctantly left the Blue Wren "Haven”. You couldn’t stay at a more user friendly place or have better hosts than Hugh and Barb - a wholehearted recommendation.

THE CALEDONIAN HOTEL is a rare gem in an outback city famous for it’s silver, lead and zinc. Of the 77 licenced premises that once operated in Broken Hill it still opens it’s doors to the weary traveller and, though it no longer serves alcohol, it does serve up lashings of old world charm and hospitality.

Hosts Hugh and Barb will make you welcome from the moment you arrive until your reluctant departure and are a wealth of knowledge in regards what to see and do whilst at ‘The Hill’. A stay at the Caledonian is a unique and enchanting experience. The old hotel has been lovingly restored and tastefully decorated. The lounge room walls are adorned with the works of local artists, one of which now hangs proudly in our home. Your stay will be enhanced by one of the four spacious and beautifully appointed period bedrooms, all of which have convenient access to the delightful rear garden and secure off-street parking.

Treat yourself to the on-suite room if you are in a decadent mood and make sure that you order the world class Caledonian breakfast, complete with Hugh’s delicious porridge, egg’s benedict and state-of-the-art coffee. It’s a fitting way to conclude your stay at the Caledonian and we feel confident that it wont be your last.

Congratulations and many thanks to Hugh, Barb and the Caledonian Hotel at Broken Hill for an absolutely outstanding and rewarding experience. Very highly recommended to the discerning traveller.

After more than 8 years living and travelling around the world, I was finally back in the Aussie bush for a visit. We stayed at the Cally on our way through Broken Hill and couldn"t have felt more welcome! Our air-conditioned room was extremely cozy and had everything we needed, from crisp clean sheets and fluffy towels to iced water in a cut crystal carafe :) The bathroom was sparkling clean and perfectly appointed, with a range of shampoos, shower gels and even bath salts on offer! The breakfast which awaited us the next morning included fresh fruit and yogurt, topped off by great coffee and a stimulating conversation with the hosts :) We can really recommend this little haven of homely hospitality in the Hill! :D

Stayed at the "Cally" for 3 nights recently whilst touring on my motorbike, the high level of hospitality shown to me, level of attention given to ensuring the rooms and facilities are tidy and comfortable are a testiment to Hugh and Barbs passion to ensuring everyone is comfortable and has a great time. If you have just had a big day of travelling or finished a day looking at broken hills sights you can just relax in the outside area or relax on the couch with the pillows and watch tv, surf the net or talk with Hugh on any subject you can think off, what ever your reason for being in Brokenhill you have to stay at the "Cally" and try Hughs Anzac biks. Hugh and Barb thx for a great 3 days and I miss the biccies!!!

Stayed here with 4 friends - going on a crazy road trip from Sydney to Broken Hill over 3 days ~ we had a bit of disaster on the way, ran out of fuel and luckily rang ahead and got a closing gas station to leave a drum of fuel in front of the pump for us, the lovely couple that runs the caledonian stayed up for us to let us into the amazing homely house we stayed in with eggs and cereal/bread for b'fast - amazing price, couldn't be better feel/ experience ~
