Hyde Park Chess Board

It is a giant plastic chessboard. During the weekend, there is a rush to play. You may need to wait sometime to get a chance to play as one game takes a lot of time to finish.

It is fun, and there are 2 smaller standard-sized chessboards near to this big one. You can also play there as well. There is no chess clock, but you can use a mobile app for the clock instead.

So cool to just play chess against strangers here. Really good players and really nice place to relax and enjoy a coffee while watching a very good standard of chess.

It is a wonderful place to play chess in, surrounded by lush green trees and feeling the warmth of the beautiful sun on your skin! ☀ Especially with the regulars (elderly gentlemen) who make the game more fun with their playful banter! Best place to meet people of the same interests. I met my best friend there :)

I have mastered the game but I'm not a grand-master.
My game has become repetitively over the years but I do enjoy a game once and a while. I nice place to relax and listen to the stories being talked. Splendid!!

I wander past at lunchtime occasionally. The chess games tend to be ones where there is a rapid clearance of pieces fairly early in the game followed by a prolonged end game. I've seen end games tackled for hours with king and two remaining pawns each. Some games are quite a verbal affair with a good mix of nationalities amongst the players and the spectators.

This is now a permanent feature structure of Hyde Park since the 70s. It's a large scale board painted underneath a glorious figus tree with movable chess pieces. The chess pieces are brought out each morning for public use. I find this a socially significant way of bringing people together, either to participate or observe. A fantastic spot during lunch hour as it has a relaxing ambiance. It's surrounded by Busby Bore Fountain, St James Café, Nagoya Gardens and the Archibald Fountain. A relaxing spot to participate or to observe.

I accidentally got there and enjoy other people playing chess .
