Lucky me got to meet the artist whose works were on display that day and entirely by happenstance. Well, perhaps not entirely, the artist had been at a party the night before celebrating the work and was hanging around, waiting to return to her studio. (figured out from Instagram) So I was fortunate enough to pick her brain and ask the (retrospectively stupid) question "How long have you been an artist?" I realise now for most the art has been there their entire lives, so it's a pointless question, but I asked it anyway. Still, Annette Bukovinsky was hugely accommodating and explained in great detail her work relating to the tragedy of the recent bush fires. Said the nicest thing about how some of the trees she had acquainted herself with on long bush walks had been reduced to ash. If you go on regular bush walks you'll understand her meaning and the presence of certain trees at various points along the way is somehow reassuring, reminding us of the space we share with nature. Enough of my gathered insight, though how about the gallery itself? Well, to start there's an entry way worthy of the great public art spaces and the facade of the building is a lovely deep lipstick red..The people inside are welcoming and the works are neatly curated. It's only a small space but enough to show a single artists current work. I always thought art galleries were scary spaces filled with snobs and rich people but it turns out we're all just human and visiting a gallery needn't be daunting or intimidating at all. My experience at Stanley Street turned out to be quite pleasant and I hope to be back there one day soon. I should mention entry was free and there was no great sales pitch - so less pressure to buy and plenty of time to simply consider and enjoy the art.
