I’m a former Carpentry student of Austrasia College, having recently finished the Cert 3 course. I must say, it was one of the most frustrating experiences I ever had regarding an educative establishment.

The college is extremely improvised, unprofessional, and highly money driven. It seems that somehow they received the licence to teach Carpentry in recent years and launched themselves without any idea and/or preparation.

In the first year, we had around 8-10 different trainers and countless changes to timetable days and hours. Only a handful of the trainers was a builder/carpenter or had any experience of construction, the rest of them I’m pretty sure had never stepped in a construction site.

We didn’t have practical classes for most of the first year (during the end of Covid) everything was done via zoom, but the school would still try and charge material fees to the students even though there was no practical classes.

The school would reject leave applications (student holidays) without any reason, even post covid when most of the students hadn’t seen their families in years. I believe this is mostly related to how improvised the school is and the lack of processes for students to catch up or re do assessments.

Regarding assessments, they use CAQA resources, just like any other school. It doesn't matter how good your English is, they are impossible to understand, whilst you have a trainer that never stepped on a building site, it’s not a good combination.

Post covid, when practical classes started up, we once had a practical class in a small office space/classroom in Ultimo (carpet floors, desks, etc) because they hadn’t rented a warehouse yet. We were literally cutting lenghts of timber in a carpeted classroom with no PPE, dust extraction methods or work benches. No one could believe it.

After that they rented a tiny warehouse in Homebush where the carpentry classes are now taken. It has barely any tools, still no dust extraction, barely any security and WHS/PPE, and just like anything else in the school it feels extremely improvised.

I had not learned a thing in my two years of Carpentry studies in Austrasia school (I am from a carpentry background and am a professional carpenter from overseas but wanted a certificate in Australia). They are giving Certificate 3 in Carpentry to boys and girls who have no idea on how to use a hand saw.

This school should be looked into it, the graduates are going to be building houses in the future, and I don’t even know how the school is allowed to teach Carpentry.

The school would also threaten with COE cancellation straight away when payments wouldn’t go through on the due date of payment, using this as an intimidation tactic.

Austrasia has no clear proceedure for reassessments, making it extremely messy to resubmit an assessment, often being asked to pay a resubmission fee, even if there is 1 of 100 questions wrong. There is no proceedure to quickly resubmit it or seek help/feedback from the trainer on where it is wrong. It would often become a big finger pointing session where the school points at the trainers and viceversa.

Staff would often ignore emails even when sent to the principle and student support.

Bottom line, this school is messy, unprofessional and a complete disaster, and I would not recommend anyone to study here.
