A lovely historical house, with so much to see and enjoy. Well kept, original furniture and furnishings - an insight into that time in history. A beautiful outlook to Elizabeth Bay.

Elizabeth Bay House is one of 12 free museums you can visit for free in NSW and a very interesting part of the early settlers history. It's also an amazing piece of architecture and definitely worth visiting! We visited it as a family and it's definitely worth the trip.
You'll be transported back in time and learn a lot about the family of colonial secretary Alexander Macleay, after the governor, the most important public official in Sydney. It's one of the most beautiful houses I've ever seen, and that staircase is incredible!

We booked to ensure a visit on a Sunday.
A truly beautiful, impressive historical home in an amazing location that is a must see for young and old alike.
This is not just for visitors to Sydney but locals too who haven’t yet been.
We were lucky enough to have a wonderful and extremely knowledgeable guide named Sandra who made the visit extra special.
Thoroughly recommended.

Fascinating history of the people who lived in, built and developed Elizabeth Bay House. It was easy to step back in time and imagine what life was like for these settlers in the 1800s. Free entry, friendly staff, a good place to spend an hour or two.

A piece of Sydney history not to be missed if you are into stately homes with a view. If you are into solving problems aka crimes, and love a game of 'Murder Mystery', the interactive game is now being held at the Elizabeth Bay House. A great way to kill two birds with one stone.

Amazing history. I lucked it by getting Howard, a guide with an encyclopedic knowledge of the place. Being interested in building methods and architecture, Howard explained it all and answered all my questions. Highly recommended if you have an interest and a couple of hours to spare. I went on a Monday in November. It was quiet. A sunny spot to enjoy harbour views.

Beautiful historic house. Lovely place to visit with beautiful views, charming old architecture and furnishings.
Staff very friendly and knowledgeable, very willing to answer questions.
Good value for the very reasonable entry fee. I spent over two hours here, wandering through, reading the interesting historical information and talking to the staff.

This is a well maintained property with stunning views of the harbour. It's incredible how talented people were in days gone by because it was so cool in the the house without fans or the ac yet boiling outside. Elizabeth Bay House is located in Elizabeth Bay and was one of the largest houses at one time. The only house at the time to have an oval atrium and a staircase without support. Rooms are maintained as they were more than a 100 years ago. It was fascinating to see how the rich lived, the furniture they had, the toys they played with or how they looked after their servants. Around 500 metres down the road is a seat with an overhang carved into the hill where the lady of the house would go and sit to read or knit when it was hot (that was in the middle of lush gardens all those years ago... now amidst buildings but still there!)

Crammed among more modern structures, Elizabeth Bay House is an architectural reminder of a forgotten aspect of Sydney's past when the colony was young and ambitions (even then) exceeded wealth. Built by an aspirational civil servant with credit issues, Elizabeth Bay House is a place to visit if you enjoy architecture and have an interest in Australian history. I would actually visit this house before Vaucluse House because the latter has substantially more grounds and furniture, making this an anticlimax in some ways if visited second. I think the most interesting architectural feature is the cantilever staircase with the dome overhead. The volunteer guide that led us through the house was marvelous. About 10 minutes walk from Kings Cross station, it makes for an interesting couple of hours.
