Authentic Japanese Hospitality and Food in Sydney.
I strongly recommend Nom to anyone, and particularly to those considering traveling to Japan for a holiday and wanting to know what it's really like "off the beaten tourist track". Having lived in Japan for two decades, I can confirm that this is the real deal. Please do take the plunge into a different world and enjoy an experience for your tastebuds and your heart!

The food was so authentic, especially the squid and soft bones are 100% match with the beer, feeling just like I’m in Japan!

The staff were so kind as well, I really enjoyed the dinner🥰

I really enjoyed the atmosphere & style of Nom and the staff were so friendly. It is so popular you need a book week in advance sometimes more. It's a small restaurant reminiscent of a traditional Izakaya in Japan.

The food was simple but absolutely delicious it was worth the 2 week wait.

The assorted Sashimi was my favourite dish especially the mackerel and highly recommend the Plum Sake, I don't usually drink sake but the plum sake was amazing.

The cost was about 80$pp for our dinner

I definitely would go again

I visited Nom Japanese restaurant with my family and friends, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which set the tone for a great meal. But what really stood out to me was the quality of the food.

The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and I especially loved the mackerel sashimi. The chicken Karaage was juicy and tender with just the right amount of seasoning. The Okura tempura was light and crispy, and the Wagyu beef asparagus was a real treat - so special and perfectly seasoned. But my absolute favorite was the dried squid, which was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious side of mayo and a touch of spice. The fried noodles were absolutely delightful.

Overall, I give Nom Japanese restaurant a 10/10 rating for their amazing food, friendly service, and cozy atmosphere💕

Small place so book in advance. The service is very welcoming and homely. Come here for sake and nibbles. Though it's possible to make a full meal, you'll need to order quite a few dishes as you might expect for an izakaya. Love the karaage chicken here.

A hard-to-find casual izakaya (いざかや) in Sydney. The appearance and vibe of Nom are exactly what you would expect in a small lane in Japan. The collections of dishes are not plenty but most of them are authentic. The average price is cheaper than other izakayas in Sydney. Since there are only a few tables, please do book in advance to avoid a long wait.

Given this price range, this Japanese restaurant was absolutely worth trying!

My favorite dish was grilled octopus. It’s so fresh and juicy. With very little soy and wasabi. It was delicious enough already.

Sashimi was totally worth the price. Cos it’s relatively cheap.

Gyoza was absolute homemade taste, thin wrap with juicy fillings. Very recommended.

Waugh beef was a bit average tbh, you might not like the raw egg sauce.

15/10. Our absolute FAVOURITE Japanese restaurant in Sydney. No frills, just simply delicious, comfort, Japanese food. 🙇🏻‍♀😋

I've been coming to Nom since 2012 when I first arrived to Sydney. To date, I've probably eaten there almost 15x and have tried almost every item on the menu, yet I'm STILL amazed at how effortlessly delicious the food is every single visit.

The 𝙏𝘼𝙈𝘼𝙂𝙊 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧. I don't say this often... But my mouth literally waters everytime I think of this multi-layered, soft, fluffy, steamy egg omelette. I don't know what goes into it, but it is soooo full of umami and has a subtle sweetness that just makes you crave for more. I can go on and on about this egg, it is truly thaaaaat magical. Trust me.

Their whole menu is simple yet each dish is executed with poise and knowledge of how textures and flavours balance out. Portions are like your typical izakaya snacks that go perfectly well with a nice cold beer. Between 2 people, you can easily order 5-7 dishes to try.

𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁:
- Tamago
- Mentai potato salad
- Vinegar mackerel
But literally everything is good.

I've also gotta mention, this small izakaya only seats about 6 tables and is runned by 3 older Japanese ladies (could be 3 generations?) in a tiny kitchen -- it honestly feels like you're just eating at a Japanese grandmother's home - simply welcoming, homey, and cozy.

Lovely staff member. Awesome food. We tried pretty much everything due to a big group. Mackerel sashimi is one of the wows to our group as it's pretty rare to find. Love the eel tempura too!

Had a great dining experience. The menu was diverse and executed well. Prices are reasonable. The Wagyu beef wrapped asparagus was especially delicious. The service is quick and friendly. Seats fill up quick so make sure to reserve ahead of time.

I’ve been to Japan but I can’t say I’m an expert in izakayas , however walking into this restaurant made me feel back there. The service is amazing , the lady that took our order gave us recommendations and even offered to give us a taste in case we didn’t like it (she said the cuttlefish had a really strong flavor , which it did but we enjoyed a lot)

We tried several entrees, cuttflefish, homemade smoked herring roe and dried squid. The squid was tasty but something you would expect. The other two were very interesting. The cuttlefish as mentioned before had a strong flavour, the lady described it similar to Vegemite taste, however I found it went well paired with my sake. On the other hand as expected the smoked herring roe had a very smokey flavour to it, but the way it cracked in your mouth and the texture of it was very interesting.

We then ordered a sashimi platter, it had tuna, salmon, vinegared mackerel and kingfish. In Sydney I usually find the salmon to be the best however in this case the kingfish was the real surprise, it just melted in your mouth.

Finally to wrap up we ordered ox tongue and wagyu asparagus as well as a rice ball. Out of these, the ox tongue was my absolute favourite, it was juicy and tasty. Wagyu had a bit of a strong sweet soy sauce taste which was nice but not my favourite. The rice ball seemed to me like an onigiri with rice and pickles it was also very nice. Finally we got an order of gyozas , they were not bad but compared to the rest of the food I think everything else stands out more.

Overall, its a very small place and you need to get a booking days before but its worth coming here, the food and service are amazing.

The best Japanese cuisine I’ve ever had in Sydney. I was lucky to get a table without booking, but it is most suggested to have your seats booked before arriving there. The boss lady and the staffs were really nice and friendly.

The Cold Tofu is topped by dried fish flakes (鰹節), spring onions and a touch of ginger, which has added a hint of Japanese taste to the entrée. Perfect for the summer time.

The Ox Tongue dish MUST come with a bowl of rice. The softness of ox tongue with just the simplest seasoning, salt and pepper, is enough to melt your tongue and brain. Can’t say it is the best in the world but definitely the best I’ve ever had.

Soft Bones is a classic combo with sake, but also a perfect match with plain rice. The fried flour cloth on the bone kept the meaty flavor and the sauce inside, so that the dish is crispy outside whilst juicy inside. Fabulous.

One of the best Japanese restaurant I had tried. Nice foods, ordered a grilled salmon and pork gyoza, both are excellent! Great staffs and services, and they do introduce a great sake. Dining for group better make reservations as the place is small and seats are limited.
