Essendon Eye Clinic & Essendon Retina

As a first time patient. I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly
and efficient way I was looked after. I had a consultation with Dr Bryan Mathews and for the first time in four years of having injections in my eye. I did not feel the injections going in and did not suffer the terrible pain that evening after the anaesthetic wear off. I have been going to an eye clinic in Melbourne. But will now keep going to the Essendon Eye Clinic, Just so much better in every way.

I had my first visit to the clinic in November 2023 and have been back a further five times.

The reception staff are very efficient and busy with all manner of duties including hospital bookings.

The surprise in the first visit was the 30 minutes or so of tests/diagnostic tests undertaken by the orthoptist, prior to seeing my ophthalmologist. Each further visit required follow up testing. The orthoptist staff are kind, caring, friendly, efficient, and professional.

This process frees up my GP referred ophthalmologist to concentrate on my eye disease. I can never be 20 years old again – still, the results of the treatment are really good.

Be patient - it's a step by step process and because my visits often involve a minor procedure I normally spent up to two hours there.

I have been attending Essendon Eye Clinic for the past 12 months. All staff are exceptional in their care and support especially Dr Rahul who takes the time to explain each step of the treatment and Bernadette who goes above and beyond to make me feel calm and comfortable. I have quite a way to go with my treatment and am happy to attend this clinic safe in the knowledge that I am in excellent hands.

Thank you sincerely Bernadette. You are the best Ophthalmologist! The past 4 years of my Glaucoma  journey you have always provided awesome support and genuine care. Needing to have surgery made me very nervous but you put me at ease and always answered my questions, you were thorough and went the extra mile. Couldn't have done it without you!

Friendly staff and good values. I had an on going eye issue and whenever it was concerning they would squeeze me in same day. My main doctor was Colin Sheppard who knew exactly what he was doing and has corrected my issue with a minor procedure. Thank you heaps, great it have my vison clear again

Dr Sheppard and the staff at the Essendon clinic are absolutely amazing! After a horrific 8 hour wait at the eye and ear hospital with a ripped cornia. I was left with no pain relief and no eye patch and sent home with a shaved eye and no instructions of care. Dr Sheppard saw me right away and made me go from extreme pain to comfortable in an instance, the best doctor I have seen in a very long time...I couldn't thank them enough. I highly recommend them.

Hi my name is Donna and ive been attending Essendon eye clinic for laser and injection procedures for the last 5months the staff are awesome friendly and cheerful I particularly want to thank all staff that I have involvement with during my appointments and Dr Elvis Ojaimi for his gentleness and assurance of wat a laser treatment is and how an injection procedure is performed with ease and magically performs the injection procedure which at first time was i so scared but he performed the procedure like a boss didn't hurt ! I was at ease the whole 5mins lol

I was always a reluctant patient when it came to attending appointments at other facilities for my ongoing eye condition. However, that has all changed since I've been going to the Essendon Eye Clinic. The staff, particularly Bernadette and Dr Brian Matthews, are so nice, friendly and compassionate. Dr Matthews has performed all procedures so gently and meticulously. He has succeeded in putting me at ease with some of the more invasive procedures where many before him have failed. I now am at a stage where I actually look forward to any future appointments there!
The Covid-19 protocols that they currently have in place are at the highest standard, and mirror the overall professionalism of this establishment to a Tee.

REMEMBER: Only basic eye test is bulk billed under Medicare.
Most of the advanced tests and specialist consultation MIGHT NOT BE COVERED BULK BILLING. Check in advance with the friendly front of the office staff regarding test and consulting charges.

I have been a frequent visitor at Essendon Eye clinic over a number of years and have always received the very best of care. All of the staff and specialists are extremely kind and helpful and have made me feel a part of the family, through what has bee a very tough time. I highly recommend them to anyone needing specialist eye care.
