Amazing spot at the end of the road in southern Tasmania. Very popular area with campers, beautiful beaches and plenty of toilet amenities available. The last 20 km from Ida Bay is a rough gravel section which can be quite taxing on a car, no problem for four wheel drives though, if driving a car it will be a slow trip dodging potholes. Well worth the trip though.

Lovely walk down to the rivers edge from the carport on concrete paving. The story of whaling and size of a 3 month whale was heart wrenching. A beautiful spot to reflect on history

Nice short walk to the point to see the whale sculpture!
Beautiful view of the water and surrounding mountain ranges.

This place is beautiful but a bit far down the dirt road.
Can be windy and cold so bring a jacket.

The route leading to the place (30m drive) is absolute joy

Being waaay down here at the end of the road at Cockle Creek / Recherche Bay has the same buzz as being at the tip of Cape York - but its more picturesque! The bronze Whale sculpture is great and the track into it has had a tidy up recently. Highly recommended

Try to see end road of the south. Driving near 3 hours from Hobart. About 15km go with gravel road to arrive this point. Just a short walk from the car park to whale lookout. Nice to try.

2 min walk to whale sculpture if you can park in National Park area. Otherwise it's a 15 minute walk along waterfront. The 2hr walk nearby is cool too

Beautiful place and lovely sculpture.
We drove to the car park 5 mins early from the sculpture then started the Fisher point track. We had our baby in a child carrier backpack and got most of the way along quite easily. Unfortunately we hit a patch of rocks that was too tricky to navigate safely, so we had to turn back a little early. There was a group ahead of us who seemed to have the same issue. We still had an amazing time and will be back when our bub is a bit older.

Lovely little viewpoint with great views of the area. I parked up near the NP info booth & toilets and walked into the lookout - about 15mins easy walking. There is another car park closer to the lookout.

Whale Lookout is a reminder of how marine life "was" in the early days.
The settlers killed many whale in the area for trade and has diminished the whale numbers substantially (times have changed).
It's a small stroll to the whale statue from the car park area.
There are plenty of toilets in the area but they are (long drops / no flush).
The view from the lookout was nice but the journey to Whale Lookout provides more of an adventure with beautiful views on the way.
Take your time driving and use your headlights as it's a dirt road for about 20klm...
Spend some time walking around the beaches and soak up the serenity (bring a picnic / no shops or cafe in the area).
You need to bring everything with you... food, drinks and swimwear. The sea water is too cold for me / and there are NO fresh water shower). Walking shoes are handy and drinking water in a bottle is a must.
Well worth a day trip with a few activities to stop and look at on the way...
Make sure you have enough fuel in the car as the nearest petrol station is Dover but its better to fill up at Huonville if possible due to price.
You might also consider getting a national parks car permit to avoid a fine if you plan to park for a while.... especially in summer....

I went there because I wanted to visit Australia's southernmost drivable location. The views are breathtaking, and the past is both fascinating and tainted. There are a number of short and lengthy hikes that are worthwhile. There isn't any mobile service down here. There is a 20-kilometre stretch of unpaved road to get there, but it is well worth it.

This is literally The End of the Road - the furthest south you can drive (conventially). Nice part of Tasmania with some campgrounds nearby. Very short and east walk to the Whale Lookout. Unsealed road for 20km or so to get here, but a regular car can do it.

Definitely well worth the drive to the end of the road. Don't be put off by the 30 odd K of dirt road, the scenery at the end is breathtaking!

A French Admiral could not express the feeling he had at a place he called the end of the world. Simply. I agree.

Stunning spot on the coastline - enjoyed a dip and a walk around the peninsula. Busy spot for camping in the summer and can see why with the stunning scenery and weather.

The drive from Hobart to Cockle Creek is a beautiful drive and can be easily completed in a day. Cockle creek and the whale lookout is a beautiful area. Whale look out is an easy walk, only five minutes from where you can park your car. There are other walks as well, they are somewhat longer and depending on the weather can be a bit tricky. There is also one walk where you have to time your walk with the tide. Whale lookout is right next to Boltons Green Camp ground, there is also a ranger stationed there as well. Don’t forget to pay your national park fees, we were in Tassie for 13 days and brought the two month option for entering national parks as we are going in and out a number of them during our stay. We did not camp, only a day trip, there are some nice picnic tables to enjoy your lunch and toilet facilities as well. There is good access to go down on the beach and walk around to the creek area. There are remnants of old timber mill and a lovely story about the ladies that ran the mill when the men headed off to war… it is a great spot to visit, the most southern part of Australia where you are closer to Antarctica than Cairns!
