Highly recommend to get the 700grams boneless chicken. Juicy & succulent! The chilli sauce a bit on the sweeter side, wished it was more garlicky & spicy. The rice although flavourful but it was not quite the same as the original 油饭I have tried in Singapore. Overall, I recommend to give it a try if you are craving for chicken rice! 4.5/5 👍👍

Really good place to visit and the prices exceed your expectations for what hainanese chicken could be. The fried chicken skin and wings are also awesome. Family meal for 4 at around $65 is great value!

Juicy and delicious chicken. Noodles were nice as well. Really nice chicken broth. A bit compact and less seats though

We got the family option with 4 servings of chicken rice and 2 servings of chasiu. We added extra pork belly and horfun. Family set came with 4 bowls of(chicken) rice, sauces and broth.

Chicken was succulent, pork belly was crispy, chasiu was on the fattier side but still very tasty. Horfun was delicious, was like a light harmee broth with horfun instead.

Environment was clean, staff were friendly and precise when explaining menu. Plenty of seats indoors and outdoors.

Location was a bit out of the way but the food made up for it 👍🏻

Really great chicken rice… prob considered the best in Melb IMHO. Rice is insanely tasty. Only criticism, and this is nit picking, is the portions are a little on the small side… but the quality is insanely great. Also, to be clear, this ain’t not fancy shmancy place for hipsters to hang out etc. therefore the atmosphere isn’t “fancy”. You go here for the amazing food, then you get out. Highly recommended if you love food that’s actually great, opposed to being blindsided by the AmBiAnCe.

Yup. If you are a true Chicken Rice lover then highly suggest. Slightly different than what I am use to but the chicken was beautifully velvety, fluffy rice and good tender roast pork. Definitely on my regular visit list

Excellent restaurant, amazing food highly recommend the chicken and rice. It's delectable! The staff are friendly and are always willing to help. nothing would delight me more than coming here on weekends to enjoy the beautiful chicken rice. I recommend coming before 6:30pm, because after that it becomes crowded and you probably don't want to eat outside in the freezing cold! Overall this would be a great place to eat for dinner and i can't wait for my next visit!

3 of us came there first time and tried each set with fragrant rice and Chicken, Roast Pork and Char Siew Pork. We ordered Chai Boey, Chicken Wings and Chicken Skin too. The portion is satisfying as you will end up coming out of restaurant with full tummy (happy tummy!).
The fragrant rice was delicious, the hainanese chicken was juicy, tender and yummy.
The roast pork and charsiew pork were on point. The chili and ginger sauce which i reckon is homemade probably the best sauce so far i had in chinese restaurants in Melbourne.
The chicken wings was disappointing as its not crunchy, not that hot too. I had high expectations though for the chicken wings.
The Chai Boey was delicious as we wouldn’t get this level of soup here in Melbourne.
But overall, i would come back to this restaurant again. I love the food, service and the vibe. Gai Wong offers simple menu yet focus and delicious. I love this type of restaurant that know what they doing and good at it.

I’ve been craving for Hainanese chicken rice for awhile as my regular restaurant no longer sells it.
Honestly small place but the Hainanese chicken rice is 100% tasty. Comes with 2 sauces one is ginger chilli the other is spring onion and ginger sauce. Chicken is soft and moist with its Hainanese sauce 👌🏻. Rice was soft and fragrant!
Ordered roast pork with rice and is also delicious as well.
Soy braised eggs is good not salty and the uncle lip’s fried chicken was okay as lacked of flavour.
Highly recommend coming here!

Was so great ordered take out for dinner!

We will definitely be coming back!

Confused about all the 4 star ratings — this more than deserves 5 stars, it has the best chicken rice I’ve eaten in Australia. Service is efficient and friendly, and every component of the hainanese chicken is so good that it almost makes me emotional lol. Like I feel blessed that this restaurant exists. Gai wong is basically providing a public service, bless them

Possibly the best hainanese chicken in Melbourne. Eating here brought back memories of my travels eating out in Singapore & Malaysia, without the humid weather. The chicken comes out cold but is already full of flavour, you could easily eat it without the accompanying sauces. Also boneless so no need to get your hands dirty.

My fingers are crossed for their success and opening more stores in Melbourne!

Enjoyed everything we ordered, from the roast pork with crackling, bbq char siew.pork, hainanese chicken, to chicken flavoured rice. Options of ordering by set or individual items. Reminded me of Malaysia street food. Recommended.

TAKEAWAY REVIEW

Friendly staff, awesome legit Hainanese Chicken Rice.

The chicken is cooked with tender care, so much so that the gelatinous chicken stock settles in between the silky skin and meat in a delicate jelly. I also love, love, love the bright and tangy chilli garlic sauce. Get the family set for best value, you won’t regret it.

Post covid lockdown I have since visited Gai Wong to dine in and almost missed out on the chicken, so make sure you get there before they run out of chicken for dinner service!

From fellow Malaysians, thank you Gai Wong for giving us a taste of home.

P.S. Roast pork was really good too

Reckon this is by far the best hainanese chicken rice in Melbourne! Portion is a good size, enough to fill a hungry stomach, and taste and texture is great!

There’s car parking on the side street and tram stop nearby so definitely a easy location to get to.

Service is welcoming and friendly, and the place is clean and bright. Would definitely come back to try their other dishes 😊

I usually go for the Hainanese chicken (which is always a feel-good) but had to give the Ini Kari Lah a go before it disappeared from the menu! So good I had to get another for dinner. Please consider having it as a permanent item!

came by with a group of Singaporean friends tonight. we have all been in Melbourne for more than 10 years, and the chicken at Gai Wong is undisputed the best Hainan chicken in Melbourne and probably Australia. it is the closest to what we enjoy in Singapore, cold chicken with the gelatanious chicken jelly underneath the skin. it even has dark sauce, which is what we eat with our chicken rice in Singapore. simply sensational stuff. nothing comes close in Melbourne, and yes, we have been searching for the longest time. owner is very friendly and extremely dedicated to the craft, thanks for the great chat at the end of a fantastic meal tonight.

Ordered a bunch of dishes from this new chicken restaurant and was delighted by the dishes we got. There’s good and then there’s great chicken rice, and these guys really know their stuff! Chicken was moist but above all, the way they sliced the chicken is exceptional (almost like how you could taste the textural difference between well sliced sashimi and ordinary) - boneless, just right in terms of thickness and super tender. It does make a difference. The chicken was tasty and the accompanying sauces were good (the chilli could do with a little more heat). The roast pork and giblets were also great accompaniments. I did feel that the portion of the veggies was a little light on though. Overall, an exceptional meal and my new go to for Hainanese Chicken rice.

The best chicken rice in Melbourne. I’ve been here too many times to count. It is my go to for chicken rice and something I crave when I’ve had a bad day. The chicken is so yummy and juicy. The rice is fragrant.

It is a specialty store which only sells what uncle lip is mastered so don’t expect a huge menu but simple food done well.

Uncle lip also loves dogs so I get to bring my fur baby along and sit on the patio (with a heater for cold nights) to enjoy my meal.
