Objectively one of the best beer experiences in all of Europe, let alone Germany/Austria. It's a unique setup, where you grab either a half or full liter ceramic mug from the shelves along the wall as soon as you walk in, wash it out at the stone fountain, pay for the size and style of beer you'd like, and take the ticket to the folks pouring from the barrels/taps. When I was here in mid-February 2024, they had just released their seasonal Lenten Bier, so there were two options (Märzen is their year-round beer), which was very exciting. Both were very reasonably priced at €3,60/€7,20 for 0,5l/1,0L of the Märzen and €3,90/€7,80 for the seasonal beer, both freshly poured from the holzfass/barrel. There is a huge biergarten outside for better weather and inside at least six huge bierhalls to find a seat/table to share with others. There is also a section of standing tables in the main hallway with the food vendors. Speaking of food, there are multiple stalls/windows to purchase food at, with lots of variety to choose from. Many traditional offerings to pair well with the delicious nectar of the monks. Warning, cash only for both food and beer. Truly a fun and exciting atmosphere in an impressive river city. Would love to return in the summer to experience the outdoor vibes and views. A must-visit in Salzburg!

Pretty hard to beat this old brewery if you’re looking for an authentic beer. Enjoyed a (cash only) cold one in the garden area then went inside to grab some food and sit in the beer hall where you see folks who have been coming for what looks like decades enjoying conversation and friendship!! loved the vibe and really enjoyed the beer

This place is a must-visit for foodies and beer aficionados. The entire dining process of having the chilled beer with some roast pork and sauerkraut is a unique experience. Describing the food as delicious would be an understatement. The beer and food serve as testimony to the 400 years of tradition and culture that is a major stronghold of this institution.

The yummies meat ever 😋it’s melting in mouth.
100% recommend to all. Also they have unique beer 🍻

From 1465 to 1525 there was a collegiate monastery of Augustinian canons, which also looked after the parish of Mühln. The monastery became orphaned and Prince-Archbishop Burckhard II of Weisspriach settled the Augustinian hermits from Munich, who took over the property in 1605 and expanded it from 1607 to 1614. After the Munich Motherhouse, it was the second largest Augustinian monastery in the Bavarian-Austrian region.
The brewery was founded in 1621. The monks sold beer first at the monastery gates, then in specially purchased inns.

Very cool place with a lot of people, always full of people, different languages, companies etc.
There are a lot of places to sit outside and inside.
They breu their own beer. So the concept is easy as you can imagine: just grab a glass that size what you want 🍺, pay and they'll fill it up for you. Also, if you want there are different options of snacks, or food. Mostly tasty local.
Parking is for free, just don't forget to stamp in while you paying for your beer.

We stopped in for just a 0.5 L but absolutely loved our short visit. The cask beer goes down super smooth and is delicious. Sitting in the large hall with Austrians of all ages enjoying beer is an experience not to be missed.

Great for lunch. The Goulash and boiled beef (traditional) were both really good.
Nice beer also.

Very interesting place! A unique approach to your restaurant-brewery. Self service, you have some options to pick your food and the brewery will calm your thirst with some fresh beer. Definitely worth a try!

Traditional beer garden . While only having two beer choices , they were good and inexpensive . Also a great food court with many choices. Be sure to have cash since that is what is only accepted

Came here with a bunch of tourists who met off HostelWorld. Food and beer was great.

Honestly not trying to cater to English speaking tourists so you may want to actually speak some German. I’ll come back here when I next visit Austria.

Don’t lose the little ticket.

Love this beer garden, easy to find and close to the center of Salzburg. The garden is huge and on some nights it's hard to find a table in peak hours. In the garden you have a few food stalls and in upstairs in the main building you have a great selection of other plates and appetizers. Great atmosphere a must when in Salzburg.

In just one visit this has become one of my favorite places in the world. It's just an experience you CAN'T miss. It's a little confusing when you come in but don't get discouraged. Walk through the building towards the sound of people. Find the stand with mugs, grab one, pay at the register, go to the man with the barrel, show him your receipt and then find a place to sit. That easy for the most amazing experience in Salzburg

When in Salzburg, this place is worth a visit, even if you don’t like beer. It is like an institution in the city. The beer garden and the halls themselves are near on instaworthy, the restaurant marketplace was very nice, a good selection of all sorts of Austrian cuisine, and the service of beer and other drinks to me was rather unique. Either ask for advice from the cashier or just watch how the locals “do it” and you’ll be fine, you will end up with a good mug of whatever you’ve ordered regardless. I will be back! Enjoy!

This is amazing place, huge restaurant/brewery. There is a self-service, simple but really delicious food, very good beer from the wood barrel and the most important is amazing atmosphere. This is must visit if you are in Salzburg.

Fantastic beer hall / beer garden in Salzburg. Beer garden outside has a small selection of food and pretzels, heading up stairs into the main area you are able to get beer and food. Many different food vendors and styles to choose from. I had the pork belly, Käse kreiner and BBQ Ribs, all were absolutely delicious.

This place is cherry on the cake after visiting marvelous, beautiful, gorgeous old town of Salzburg. Be sure to come when opening this very popular place otherwise it is hard to find free place to sit. You can buy various type of food from many different stores (not just meat) and bear, half of liter or one liter. Very interesting concept with self service. After all, this place with really delicious food was top spot that should not be missed when visiting city of Salzburg.
