Passed by while driving through and had to immediately stop and check out this beautiful place. The water was calm, the sky blue with a few scattered clouds. I grabbed my camera and captured tjlhe moment. I also noticed the abundance of birds here. The reduge is teeming with life. I understand there are trails here, but I was unable to get any hiking in. Next time!

Camp host Mary is doing a fabulous job of keeping campsites tended to.Keeps the fire pits and BBQ cleaned several times a day.(People please don't litter. Not even micro trash. And cigarette butts). The pit toilets are freshly painted .Toilet paper is always stocked .Room freshen in Bathroom. Also hand sanitizer. Mary checks the camp grounds throughout the day.Greets guest as they arrive. Knowledgeable of the park and and areas geography.Overall professional and friendly. .Enjoyed riding my ebike around the 3 mile trail and visit to the visitor center. Thank you.

Great oasis in the desert. Lots of birds to see. Nice trails for walking in the area. The visitor's center is nice, with a lot of good history displays.

Highly recommend Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge as a 1-4 hour stop off Highway 93. Or you can camp near there and make an overnight of it. As you are driving up highway 93 through the dry desert terrain, suddenly you begin seeing a green swath of growth that is breathtaking in the midst of the barren land. This land is fed by the water that runs off the mountain snow melt and makes a beautiful water way that has become a critical stop for birds migrating along the Pacific flyway. The nature center is beautiful inside and the volunteers that help run it are kind and a wealth of knowledge. I am very excited to go back in the fall to see the peak activity of bird migration. An absolute must for birders! And this is a great place to stretch your legs on a walk and has clean bathrooms!

Helpful Travel Safety Tips: Cell phone service is often spotty or nonexistent. When preparing for travel through desert terrain and roads I suggest you take the following: a topography map of the state, 1 gallon of water for each occupant, nuts/dried fruit, sunglasses, large brimmed hat, sunscreen, long sleeve shirt, long pants, close toed sneakers/hiking footwear, a roll of toilet paper with a good garbage bag (always pack out your trash), flashlight with fresh batteries, and a blanket. Also, I recommend that you get gas regularly, keeping above 3/4 of a tank as there are areas without gas for many miles between service stations.

Absolutely beautiful, hiking trails are well worth your time. Bortle 2 skies means the most stars you've ever seen at night. Amazing place.

This place is nice! There are a few free camping sites and a nice trail. No swimming or wading is allowed. There are pit toilets, but no water. Pack it in, and pack it out. There is a large dumpster on your way out.

7 miles of trails, and lots of birds. The visitor center was closed but the facilities are very well maintained and the signage in the trails is excellent.

Wildlife preserves and wildlife refuge areas are some of my family's favorite places to go...

For those not aware of this refuge's importance, within its confines is an isolated aquifer that has an underground cave system where there a species of fish that exist nowhere else in the world... specifically a species of pup fish... The caves that this aquifer and these fish are located in is inaccessible because of the fragility of the ecosystem within... This is a very small park but very well laid out the trails that are meant to be walked have a different color of gravel on them so you can see where you are going easily... I made sure to get pictures of the cabin which has been on the preserves property since 1930s and The stone house which is also dating back about 80 years...
It was actually quite a warm day out ( Although a good 15゚ cooler then Las Vegas) so we didn't walk around as much as we would have liked. We are looking forward to going back later in the month since there is a campground that is labeled primitive which means it has no other services than pit toilets. The campground is small at 15 spaces but those spaces are fairly large. Alamo which is the town near it is a beautiful little town with a very storied history. This wildlife refuge is definitely worth the trip and is quite beautiful.
Aside from the review of the wildlife refuge one thing I recommend if you are going to eat in Alamo is going to the Sinclair gas station ...
within it is a Chester's chicken which is where we picked up lunch and it was delicious...

Pahranagnat Camp ground on Upper Lake Road. 14 days max free camping, just pull in and pick. Dirt road was fine, but a few trees scraped us while driving in. There is a log book across from the Camp Host. The Hosts do keep a diligent eye on the area. We have a Class A 36ft and a tow, 55ft total. Sites 2,3 and 4,5 and 13, 14, 15 are good for long rigs. First Come so get there early. There is a dumpster at the top of entrance on Upper Lake Road but it was overflowing due to construction in area. No water, vault toilets that I did not check out. Verizon works awesome and our Neighbor with TMobile had no service at all. Cannot use ATV's here. Beautiful, peaceful, clean. Enjoyed our stay immensely.

Fantastic. Must check out if you are in the Las Vegas area. It is only around 90 minutes north on highway 93. Also a very scenic drive! This also has a very sacred Nuwuvi Indian area which has beautiful trees and springs in the middle of this otherwise arid land! A must see. Give yourself plenty of time because a little further north is extraterrestrial highway which has some great photo ops as well!

One of my favorite places to visit outside of Vegas. It's not busy compared to Lake Meade. Very quiet and serene. Visitor center has clean bathroom and exhibits outside.

Meet th camp host Marilyn, a wealth of information. A very kind, and happy person. A rarity these days. This place isn't what I expected. Lots of hiking on trails that are well maintained. If you are any kind of bird watcher you will enjoy this place. The camp sites,15 I believe, are clean, and quite well spaced apart. Loads of privacy. I plan on staying th full 14 day limit mostly because of that. It looks like there are 3 vaulted toilets. From any campsite there is one close by. Obviously cleaned on a regular basis.

I have been coming here for almost 20 years. It had been a while, but I love being able to camp right near the lake. My daughter caught her first two fish ever. I look forward to coming back in a few weeks.
