McCoy Cemetery

The sign takes you to a private lot. Rumor has it, a Hatfield owns the McCoy cemetary property now and won't let people see it including their family. For a historical site, you think they would handle that.

Imagine being so bitter that you literally deny people the right to a cemetery tied to American history simply because you can. Imagine buying a piece of property solely for this purpose. I wouldn't be surprised if this person desicrated their remains the way he is designating their memories by placing stipulations on even their family from visiting them! It's absolutely disgusting. I'll be doing a search to see if I can find the owners name because I personally believe if you're going to be this hateful, people should be well aware of who you are. To the owner...imagine if you died and someone bought your grave with the intent of keeping your grave to themselves solely for the purpose of hate. If you can't see what you're doing is wrong, then my guess is you will die alone and bitter. I truly hope that the state will find a way to declare their Graves a historic site and will restore them to their rightful place in history.

The official monument sign is approximately 100 yards south of the actual cemetery on the same, northbound side of KY 319. It is at the edge of a small gravel parking area that serves as a safe place to park for those visiting the site of the Randall McCoy farmstead (acrossthestreet). Unless you can prove that you are a direct descendent of one of the people buried in the little cemetery it seems that you are unwelcome to visit the site. There's a handwritten sign at the bottom of the driveway stating that it is private property off-limits to the public. We were told that this has been the case for many years and that it has even gone to court. Five of the McCoy children who died from gunshots are buried here on what was originally McCoy land on the hillside where they could be seen from the farmhouse. Ironically, the property (so we were told) is now owned by a descendent of the Hatfield side of the troubles. It's their land, so what can you do? It's just a shame that it's this way. We were told that the state was not even allowed to place the road sign in the proper place and that's why it's down the road.

I go wherever I want. No sign stopped me.
