USWV Veterans Colony Cemetery

My grandparents are buried here. The groundskeeper keeps everything looking nice and very respectful to those who are buried and to the families that visit. He was also present during my grandmother’s burial and made sure everything was cared for. This is a small community of veterans and it warms my heart to know that they are cared for by some good people.

I truly enjoyed my visit to the Colony last weekend. The residents I spoke with were friendly and helpful and have lots of advice for me. If you are wartime veteran looking for a place to relocate it's worth the visit... This is a very rural community outside of Wilburton. The Board of Governors is very particular about who they award the acre plots to. Very basically a 1 acre plot may be awarded to a wartime veteran for a one time fee of $200 plus a $50 background check processing fee. The Colony has its own Cemetary and once you are awarded your land you may reserve a plot in it. There's so much information that my advice is to look on the website and contact someone from the Board of Governors in order to receive your application. This is a community who respects everyone's privacy and most of the vets that live there do so for peace and quiet so if your noisy rowdy and like to party hearty this place is not for you.

This is a homesteading location for honorably discharged veterans.

In order to live here, you must be a member of an organization like the VFW or DAV. The initial "membership" was a one-time payment of $250, but that may have changed. You and all adults who live in the household must do a background check.
You can purchase an acre lot for sale, but you're not buying the land, you're buying the improvements, and it's basically a 99-year lease.
You can build a house, live in what's already there, or move a house in but you must have electricity & running water.
If you want 'farm animals', you need to get approval from the board, and you should check with your neighbors.
If you pass away while there, your spouse has the option to stay, with Board approval, or they can sell. If your children want to live there, they have to meet the same veteran requirements.
