Books On the Square

This place is amazing!!! They have everything!! From $2 to signed first editions!! I could have stayed there all day. The owners are so nice and helpful. If you like books, this is absolutely the place to be!!!!

If you love books, this bookstore is awesome!! I could have wandered around in here for days. Any genre you can think of, old authors, new authors, classics, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Virden is a little hard to get to, but it's worth the trip. No restaurants to speak of but there's a nice little park across from Books on the Square so pack lunch. And don't forget to check out The Sly Fox bookstore as well which has the latest books and a knowledgeable bookseller as well.

This is a fun find in small-town Central/Southern Illinois. I enjoyed looking at their large selection of WWI and WWII history books. A nice, friendly atmosphere is present in the Virden store. The owners know the history of their buildings and the surrounding ones as well. It’s worth a day trip from the St. Louis area. I’m looking forward to going back.

Books on the Square is amazing. I just happen to have stumbled upon it via a net search. I was looking for an unusual Illinois historical book which had its ISBN switched with an off topic paperback. Five book and two puzzle returns later, I called the Virden store. The owner was very familiar with the book straight away. She verified that it was in stock (in her hand) and shipped it to me straight away...it arrived this morning. Super book, super condition, super customer service. I will most definitely buy direct from this store again

I'm not sure why anyone would give a one star rating without giving a reason, unless it was an accident. I've been going to this shop on and off for 6 or 7 years now. Ever since that first time I've been impressed by the friendliness and level of knowledge of the proprietors. They participate in local activities, put on plays and donate the proceeds for stage equipment at the school. They sit and visit with neighbors and shoppers alike.

They specialize in local and historical stuff but have a little of everything on hand, and can order titles they don't have. At a customer's request they will go hunting for whatever it is that the customer is interested in.

That one-star review made me mad; I can't imagine anyone who's been in that shop would have any reason to be dissatisfied.

The staff is always super friendly and helpful and the selection is amazing! You can find one of a kind books here. It's a treasure trove, honestly!

Best used book store ever.

Tons of books and other stuff over 3 buildings ,but the owners determine prices based on ebay searches, so condition isn't factored in, so expect to pay top dollar for everything!

I think the experience would be better if things were more organized here. Books everywhere...to the point where you can't look around well. Prices are average.
