Eureka County Court House

Our friendly local tour guide, Luz, showed us around this beautiful historic building in the heart of Eureka. This courthouse is remarkably well-preserved and intact for its age (1879!). The wood inside is all original, and imported from Spain. The courtroom itself is gorgeous, and has some interesting historic ephemera decorating it as well. Worth a visit if it's open!

Eureka County IS the largest county in Nevada.
Although my experience with the Eureka County Courthouse would cost me years of my life, the people I met in Eureka, including the Judge and the Deputies who ran the Eureka County Jail were exceptionally fair, polite, and kind. This was back in 2002 before I-44 ran with U.S. 50 when there was literally billboards informing you that you were on "The Loneliest Road in America".
Ely to Reno was a desolate journey with a few mining towns that survived after the 1800s speckled along the route, but if you blinked you missed them.

Stopped for gas in Eureka after driving east on Hwy 50 which is a must when driving the Lincoln Highway in Nevada. Directly across the street from the gas station sits the most majestic building in town, the Eureka County Courthouse. Built of bricks in an Italianate style, it is only one of two Nevada courthouses built in the 19th century which is still in use. A perfectly proportioned architectural design makes this courthouse a real standout.

Beautifully preserved building (at least on the outside) I love the carved wood front door.
