Great experience. I’ve encouraged family and friends to visit. The stories of Fr. Damien, Mother Marianne and Dr. Mouritz, who lived and worked in Kalaupapa, as told by the expert guides and terrific books for sale there, are inspirations to this day. Note: the park is a slice of paradise, literally. Enjoy ….

If you come to Moloka'i you have to do this tour. We flew in and out due to the mudslide a few months back, and doing so provided amazing views of the island. Richard was a great guide and made our experience phenomenal. The community and history is something I cant just describe, but something you'd have to experience.

Moloka'i is a very special place - if you want to visit the island, you must be invited. People who fly to the island to do a hike and tour are essentially "invited" by extension of the tour companies who have been permitted to operate there. The hike down to Kalaupapa is not easy and was very muddy, but it was worth it and I would do it again. You can ride donkeys down, but that seemed more terrifying to me than going by foot. We flew in to the top, hiked down, and flew out from the bottom of the hike at the end of the day. You have to take a taxi from the airport to the top of the hike. There are only two ways out after you hike down -- hike back up (by foot or donkey) or fly out.

Unless you pay 75-200 dollars for a tour, you cannot go on this hike. Oh, and you need at least 3 business days for them to process the permit. Very very disappointed.
