Super fun hike, regardless if you enjoy the history of Father Damien, which you will. Setting-up entry into the park is difficult and some hikers were turned around because they did not get a sponsor to enter Kalaupapa.

Serene, peaceful, and beautiful. If you ever get the opportunity to go here, go at least once. The history of all who lived here as their residence and those who came selflessly to serve them is incredible. Pray for the handful of patients remaining and for all those who keep this place Kalaupapa.

For anyone who is visiting Hawaii or from Hawaii it's a must-see. Take the tour if you're not able to hike fly-in. It is worth it. Unbelievable views, humbling history, a place with a lot of power or as we say in Hawaii "Mana

This is Sacred Ground! If you stop and quiet yourself, you can feel the earth cry out the anguish of the 103 years of exiled people banished from family and friends.
Then there are the rays of light shining through the darkness of people who came to help. Among whom are St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. The two Hawaiian saints who spent their life to bring hope in the midst of what seemed hopeless.
There is history here that needs never be forgotten.

Rode mules down. Great adventure. Not scary at all unless you have fear of heights.

This beautiful and serene place will never be forgotten, it is filled with all level of memories, sad and somber, happy and celebrated all within it's historical contributions to Hawaii and it's people since 1866. I was blessed to have visited in October 2015 and bring Christmas gifts to all workers and residents. (weather in December is too harsh and extreme to venture to.) I will forever have been blessed to have met such wonderful and kind people that work and live there.

Went there when I was in college on Oahu in tbe early 90’s studying Hawaiian Geology.. I hiked in with my class and got a tour of the area by the mayor/sheriff/ resident. He was there because he was inflicted with Leprosy. The next day we flew out from the small airport to continue the lab part of the class in Lanai. A good movie and book named Molokai is a great read to learn more about the history.

A stunning view of an important site of great historical import. It’s a must stop just to look out and understand what happened down there.

Flying in and out was right for us. The tour was spectacular. Guides Liane and Rick were outstanding and passionate guides who knew everything and treated us to musical performances of Hawaiian songs and ukulele and flute. Some people who had walked down joined us, but the mule riders had their tour cancelled because of heavy rain the night before.

Wow. You've gotta go here if you get the chance. I went via a flight and tour package deal. I took an 8 seat Cessna plane from Oahu and then took the tour once I landed. Others on the tour had hiked or taken a mule from the cliff-top down to the settlement. Either way, everyone found the experience informational and enjoyable.

Really nice park, with some cool sculptures. Lepers used to be put away here in ancient times. There are special tours, and you can ask for a ride on a mule throughout the tour. It is a group thing, and works very well if you are traveling alone or with someone.

We walked the trail down which is very arduous. It is WORTH IT! This is an awesome tour and well worth your time. You can fly out ONE way and if you add up the cost it is CHEAPER to walk down and fly out rather than ride the MULES. DO NOT go to Molokai and miss this.

Best scenery of Hawaii. Do the hike down, don't take the mule. It's more dangerous trying to balance yourself on the mule especially if someone is overweight. Walking down is more special. My 70yr old mother did it in 2 hours. Then she took the flight out for $60.

This place is truly a life changing experience. We walked down because there's story of the mules crashing into each other and one was dead 2 passengers in life support. We don't want to place our lives in danger and cause cruel and unusual punishment to the mules. Walking down is safer and you can test your strength and stamina. Some young guys ran down in 30 minutes. We took 1 hour to walk down and 1 back up. Others took 2 hours but in the end it's the journey you took with your feet that counts. If you are mobidly obese take the flight in and out.

What an educational hike and historical tour! Fr Damien truly cared for the shunned in Hawaii's past, and we were able to shake hands with empathy toward one of the only remaining original residents.
