Great place

I remember this as a place of great pain. It was built as the combination church and grade school for Sacred Heart Parish probably during the 1920s. When the church next door was built in the 1950s the "Formation Center" became the grade school exclusively. I was introduced to it as a student in the late 1950s. One of my first memories is of a little girl -- in First Grade -- being firmly spanked by the "sister" with a ruler in front of the class. In later years, the same kids would repeatedly get in trouble, and be spanked or otherwise punished. The supposed educational experience made no difference to them. For those kids there was no real place to study. At least two priests associated with Sacred Heart would later be caught up in the major diocesan pedophelia scandals.
On the good side Msgr. Geno Baronni who would march at Selma with Martin Luther King and who later was an Undersecretary of Housing under Jimmy Carter was briefly a parish priest here.
