Great place to learn about Bison, elk, and wildlife in the prairie. You can drive in the enclosure and see the Bison but no getting out of your vehicle inside the enclosure. You can also see them up close thru very power telescopes and binoculars. Staff is very knowledgeable and very friendly. Most of the staff have been working with Bison for a couple years and a few have been there for 7+ years. It a long drive to the learning center and Bison, but it's well worth it. They have plenty for kids to do and look at and also have a theater there as well that shows a movie about Bison and Prairie life. I recommend going there if you haven't been before.

This is an amazing place to visit you can only imagine what it looks like a hundred years or so ago.

A true gem for any nature lover. Neal Smith is the largest prairie restoration in Iowa. Bison roam here again. See it!

I love the Prairie learning center in the summer, but it is very unique in winter. The bison like to hide out on the south side of the hills, meaning they are all more likely to be visible from the center trails. It does get very cold with a wind chill in winter...so take care!

The visitor's center is great. They show a short, 15 minute, video and they have great exhibits. We walked a short bit of the trail due to heat. We used the lunch room provided. It has a soda machine, snack machine and tables. The volunteer on duty was very friendly and helpful. The auto tour was great. We saw a small herd of Bison with many calves so they are building back the prairie!
