Chemung County DMV

The DMV gets a bad rap by people always complaining about the service and wait times. My recent visit required a bit of time to complete what I was there for, and I have to compliment the employees for the friendly and professional service I received. I was there no more than a half hour, there wasn't a long wait. If you are someone who can only say bad things about the DMV, just remember that the employees take their jobs very seriously and it takes their full attention to what they are doing for you, so do a little research before you go, make sure you bring what you need, and bring a little patience and a whole lot of manners. It will make their day go a lot smoother and so will yours!

I had a great experience with this DMV, granted it was all over the phone since I'm out of state. I could not get a hold of anyone from the main DMV line over multiple calls/days. I called the Elmira office and immediately reached someone who took it upon herself to see the issue was resolved. Probably the best DMV experience I've ever had.

Complaints are unfounded. This DMV is amazing with amazing staff. No doubt it was frustrating that the DMV was closed and there was no one answering phones during the pandemic, but not their fault. Get over it. They are now open, fast, friendly, and helpful, as they were in the past-but now they really go above and beyond. They can’t change laws or DMV rules for you so don’t waste your time arguing about whether you think something is fair or not. Don’t be upset if you don’t bring the correct documents. They can’t help that. Now, Do you stand in line so they can help you make sure you have everything you need? Yep. Do you take a ticket to then process all of the proper forms and documents etc.? Yep. Is this different than ANY other DMV? nope-with the exception that in bigger cities you will find the DMV crowded, standing room only, dirty, and wait much much longer waits with angry people that are rude to employees all day long making employees exasperated with the people-and other DMVs hope you just know what forms to fill out and documents to have and leaving you to get in the back of the line if you show up at the window not having what you need instead of screening and helping you have the right documents to begin with as they do here. I have had 3 kids get their permits and their drivers licenses through the Elmira DMV-the first time trying- in the past 5 years. I’m not from the area and I’ve experienced other DMVs and I’m very pleased with Elmira DMV. I never witness employee exasperation here. All these complainers reviewing have likely lived in small towns and never experienced bigger DMVs or are first timers to the DMV. I’m not sure what they expected. Elmira DMV is clean and well organized and the staff are simply amazing. They went above and beyond to help me. I’ve never been so pleased with public service. Thank you to everyone, especially the women that helped me change my plates. Outstanding people and outstanding service.

Usually very good would be nice if they'd say if they are reopening today as part of phase two or if I have to go to a different DMV to register my truck today may 29 2020
