Old Fort Sumner Museum

The grave of the Kid, his buddies Charlie Bowdrie and Tom Folliard, and those of Maxwells, Salazars, Guiterezes, and cacti and lizards galore.... what's not to like? The museum has some nice artifacts, including Billy's butcher knife, and is run by really sweet people. Worth the time and then some.

Little museum and the supposed real grave of Billy The Kid. Museum has a small amount of information about Billy The Kid but overall mostly community information.

Their "pitch" is that the have the site of Billy the Kid's grave. What they don't tell you is that the grave of Lucien Maxwell is also there. The "Kid" was just a punk with a gun. Maxwell was a significant individual in the history of the west and particularly New Mexico. But, this museum does not tell you that or really have much to contribute. You are much better served in learning at the nearby Bosque Redondo Museum or even the Billy the Kid Museum in the town of Fort Sumner.

The museum is closed and empty. The grave site is still open.
