Shea Memorial Drive Hiking Trail

This trail is part of a network of trails repurposed by the South Field restoration project which was rebranded as “Union Point” due to some parts of the old Naval Airbase in corners of surrounding towns next to South Weymouth.

You can walk your dogs at this location to the depleted soil farmland which lost soil quality after centuries of harsh agricultural practices next to the Shea Memorial Grove park, adjacent to the Dog Park, and the old South Field Memorial Museum.

There’s places to park by the Dog Park, bike lanes, and a network of other connecting trails and walkways.

Good location to see New England wildlife: wild turkeys, Canadian wild geese, migrating mallard ducks, white tail deer, eagles, red tail hawks, red shoulder hawks, ospreys, herons, kestrels, sparrow hawks, fluffy squirrels, Orioles, gold finches , red winged black birds, owls, Eastern coyotes, foxes, etc. This area also has remnants of the Wessagusset Indian villages everywhere. A geologist’s dream! All kinds of rocks and boulders! Arrowheads, grind Stones, and old building foundations easily visible in the woods in winter time! Remnants of the Naval Airbase EVERYWHERE!

Sometimes you can see people on horseback here as well.

Trees of interest: wild white pine, white paper birch, maple trees, oak trees.
