Wire Bridge

A very cute out-of-the-way pull-off spot with a charming little one-lane bridge and pretty river views of the Carrabassett. We did indeed picnic here on our way to Acadia via route that passed through Montreal.

Very beautiful place this was actually my second time here. Very exciting being able to drive over a bridge that rocks. Will definitely come back in the future. Easy paths to go down under the bridge as well.

Amazing find in or near New Portand! Read up on it, and it is the only one of 4 wire bridges still standing in Maine! Watching the planks bend when a pickup truck went over was more than I expected (3,000 lb weight limit). Well worth the trek dow. The narrow winding roads to get to this one of a kind structure!

Really cool location! We found some cool rocks hidden all over the place once we crossed the bridge. Then it was a race to see who could find the next rock and who could hide the rocks most uniquely. Lots of fun!

It's 5 minutes off At 27 in New Portland. Follow the signs, turn right and park in the abandoned field. There's a treeline and a sand/rock beach with an awesome view of the bridge. Going at sunset is highly recommended as is bug spray because there is a lot. There is one picnic table, but I think it's a carry in/carry out park. Further upriver are some good climbing rocks that go into river.

A friend brought me here during a motorcycle ride.
My friend also told me that there are very few of these style bridges left in the country.
The construction is stout. No worries about driving over it to the parking area, so you can get out and walk around.

So totally worth the small side trip. Beautiful and beautifully maintained example of New England craftsmanship and engineering, crossing an equally beautiful brook. Walk on it to feel it move under you. Drive to the middle and pause to thrill the kids. Small parking and picnic area on the north side of the span. Wood plank road bed is uneven and has gaps, and the bridge is designed to sway laterally, so take extreme care on two-wheels of any flavor. If you're within 20 miles, don't miss it.

It is amazing the kinds of historical spots you can find tucked away in small towns everywhere you journey. This bridge goes back well into the 19th century and it must have been quite a feat of engineering and construction to build it over a wide river. A tablet on the wall says that the cost of construction was around $3500 - try building anything for that today! It's a very pretty spot with a nice picnic area on the east side of the bridge. Don't just drive over it, get out and walk the bridge, feeling it move beneath your feet almost as if it is alive. Very cool!

Very unique and interesting experience, kind of off the beaten path, but absolutely worth the ride out there! Not to mention the sheer beauty of the location!

Wire bridge is a great place to rest, eat, or get your feet wet. Easy to access parking on both sides of the bridge, and the bridge itself is unique and picturesque. Only con is no separate walking area on the bridge, so you’re essentially walking where the vehicles drive across. The bridge isn’t too long so it’s pretty quick to cross it by foot.

Drove over it in my truck, stopped and took some photos..it's the last of it's kind for a wire bridge.

Super cool old bridge. We especially loved standing on the edge while a car approached, watching the planks sway. The river below was pleasant for splashing.
