Springs Chapel Cemetery is located south of Hugo on Broadway Street. There is no access from U.S. 70 to the cemetery. Follow Broadway Street south from downtown Hugo. When you pass under US 70 the cemetery will be on your left. Entrance is at the south end of the cemetery where the road curves right to cross the railroad tracks. The road is paved and the cemetery is well maintained. Oldest recorded burial is 1874. The cemetery is divided into 7 sections and the numbering system shown is the one used by the cemetery association. The sections were recently subdivided into blocks which are indicated on the map but not in the enumeration. The oldest burials are located in Sections 1, 2 & 4 with the northwestern part of Section 2 being the original Springs family cemetery. Springs Chapel began as a private burial plot by Levi Spring for his family in 1874. During the early days of Hugo it was used quite extensively although being on an Indian allotment no clear title could be obtained. In 1919 the Secretary of the Interior removed all restrictions on the land and along with an additional 40 acres, purchased by Bailey Spring, the cemetery we now know as Springs Chapel began to take shape. Springs Chapel is a very pretty cemetery and the cemetery association keeps it well maintained.

Springs Chapel Cemetery is on S Broadway St, S of US-70, but you have to go under US-70 from the north or approach S Broadway St from US-271 on the south. Once there, one is likely startled 😲by how humongous & pastoral it seems, yet exceptionally well-kept. Next 👁-opener is the (sort of) "Hollywood" style sign on 1 hilltop that proclaims "SPRINGS CHAPEL." The thru-roads, perimeter fence, plot/headstone arrangement, sizable pavilion, well mowed-n-trimmed grounds, & most markers show devoted care. A very few of the monuments show the harsh signs of age — are becoming hard to read. New burials & many flowers evidence an active cemetery. Swinging, single-pipe gates w/ sheep-wire perimeter fence.
☩ Find•A•Grave reports 1,761 burials here. (April 2019)
☩ Well done folks!

My grandparents and other family are buried here, and the photos posted are not the actuality of this cemetery. I drove over 3 hours today to visit, and I am extremely disheartened. Grass is over a foot tall in some areas, no weedeating, headstones were covered in tree branches/old cut grass. A HUGE tree had fallen over on top of some stones and it has very obviously been there for months. I hate to think we chose the wrong place for my families final rest.
