We put in our Jon boat at the boat launch directly down from the Niles Dam. Water was 3'-7' feet deep pretty quickly once we launched our boat. However, going in either direction from the launch, maybe 50 yards to 100 yards, the water becomes too shallow even for a Jon boat.

The current at this spot is also more than a small trolling motor can overcome, so if you pull your prop up to get through the shallows, remember you can't get back that way since pulling the prop causes the current to pull you right back down river. Quite the challenge, bc I did raise my prop through the shallows. I had to very carefully maneuver through lanes to get back to the dock. We made it!!

All that being said, it's a great place to kayak/board/float! Again, the current below the dam heading towards buchanan is too much to recreationally paddleback up stream, so make sure you plan on exiting down stream as round trip is Very difficult.

We went originally to check out the fall colors as the trees were beginning to change, a perfect fall day in early October. Some of my pictures showcase the vibrant reds, yellows and oranges.

I believe our lack of luck making further through the river was the result of low water levels. Maybe the rain fall wasn't enough recently or the dam was regulating the water to lower levels. In either case, I'd like to try above the Niles Dam next time.

A very small area built along the river and park with a boat launch. We’ve kayaked from this point and it was a lot of fun. An activity the entire family can do. Also has the walking trial to the parks connected through here.
