We showed up after hours near dusk and the gates were closed but if you pass the entrance and go right up the road you will find the cemetery and battlefields that are open to walk free. You just wont be able to see the all of it

When we visited this site it was described as "The Confederate cemetery". It has the remains of 19 Confederate soldiers and is located on the grounds of the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, These soldiers were killed in the last few days of the American Civil War.

While visiting make sure you visit the Appomattox Court House, a National Historical Park. The village is the site of the Battle of Appomattox Court House and contains the house of Wilmer McLean, where the surrender of the Confederate army under Robert E. Lee to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant took place on April 9, 1865.

But if you're here, you already know that.

The entire Appomattox battlefield and surrender site is a very moving experience. To think of these boys who died within a day of the war ending is heartbreaking.
