Ste Genevieve Memorial Cemetery

A great gem for history buffs. This cemetery has not had a new resident since 1881. That's because it was founded in the 1700s. Not often you can see graves of people that lived in Missouri before it was US territory.

If you catch a lot of the town history you will see a lot of familiar names here. Kind of makes your hair stand up when you think about people standing here over 250 years ago. Highly recommend a visit.

Beautiful cemetery and wonderful history.

My wife and I stopped by to walk around and look at the tombstones, some of which are at least 200+ years old. Very old place with lots of cool-looking tombstones, and I observed an above-ground sarcophagus that had a hole in the top corner as if a concrete piece had broken off long ago. I peered into the hole but didn't see anything. I told my wife to take a look in the hole (as if I had discovered something). As she leaned over to look, I immediately tapped her sides and yelled "BOO!" which scared her! HA! HA! I bet this would be a great place to spend a Halloween evening!

Ste. Genevieve Spirit Reunion. Re-inactors act as people that are interred in the Memorial Cemetery. They are very well versed in the history of the cemetery. It was a very enjoyable evening.

An event called Deja vu is held there every October. Actors stand next to a grave site dressed in costumes dating back to the deceased person time. The actors tell you who they were before being buried and give a short narrative of their life. Fun night. A small fee is charged.

Very historical. Burials stopped after 1881, so nobody after that date. Sad with so many children buried there.

Need to clean and fix broken stones!
