Wanjin Catholic Basilica

The church itself is not spectacular but it is full of history. It is the oldest cathedral in Taiwan and its spiritual look is rare especially since it is located in a small town in the southern part of Taiwan. The mass is solemn and holy. Great contrast to the temples around Taiwan. An interesting place to visit!

Construction of the WanJin catholic church began in October 1869 and completed in December 1870. It is the oldest church in Taiwan based on the Spanish Basilica style, the only Basilica church in Taiwan I think. Pope John Paul II bestowed the church "Holy Cathedral of Mary" in 1984 and Taiwan recognized it as a national monument at the same year. The sculpture of Mary goes on a local pilgrimage on the second Sunday of December since 1870. Twice worshipers led the pilgrimage around Taiwan in 1991 and 2009. WanJinIs an uni?ue catholic town due to the long history of Catholicism here. The church is beautiful and the surrounding grounds are also very nice. I brought a rosary home. The church is hard to reach by public transportation therefore a car is needed. During the weekday when it is not too crowded, one could park the the car directly at the church ground.

the place was under renovation and they're preparing for Christmas season, friends told me it's prettier during spring because there are loads of roses there.. also during nighttime coz of the light fixtures, but ofc, it's solemn and holy place so I'm giving it a 5 for Jesus.. but I bet it's truly is after the renovation

Wanjin Basilica First and oldest Catholic Church in Taiwan

Wanjin Catholic Basilica is a 19-century church in Pingtung with a hundred years of history, it has been classified as a national third-level historic site by the Ministry of the Interior.
is a two-tower church pattern on the front, which looks like a Spanish bunker. There is a gable wall in the middle of the two towers. When it was created, this gable form has the image of a traditional horseback. The cross, there are two decorative patterns in the gable, the top is the crown and the bottom is the Dominican congregation. The ground was paved with red bricks to match the original style of the church. The walls of the church were clearly smeared with white lime. As soon as you entered Wanjin Village, you could see a majestic and mighty white building. There is a small garden on the left side of the main hall. In addition to the statue of the Virgin Mary, there is also a frangipani tree in the garden. The flowers of this old frangipani tree are particularly beautiful.

Long lines for confession. The church is very beautiful. The streets are lined with murals of Catholic paintings. The people line the streets with good and drinks for the pulgrims. If you are looking for a great Catholic experience, visit this church.
