Golden Gate

Great place to visit not only as a tour but also as a place to relax and enjoy a nice coffee with friends. The tour guide was excellent, giving a lot of information and later answering all the questions.

The towers and gate are in great condition, and for sure, they are worth a visit (which lasts between 1 to 2 hours). Totally recommend it!

Undergoing reconstruction, from what I saw, works are well under way, scaffolds are everywhere and it is not possible to reach some areas. Walls themselves are pretty impressive and there is also plenty of possibilities to make them more impressive

The Golden Gate was built in IV-V centuries A.D. by Roman Emperors Theodosius I (347-395) and Theodosius II (401-450) and was incorporated in the structure of Yedikule fortress in 1458. There were only four Golden Gates for the entire history of mankind. They are the Golden Gates of Jerusalem, Constantinople, Kiev, and Vladimir. According to legends, the Golden Gate could be the gate where Grand Duke Oleg of Kiev and Novgorod (845-912), also known as Oleg the Wise, nailed his shield to as the symbol of his victory over Byzantines. His victory caused two treaties between Oleg and Greeks, signed in 907 and 911. From the Oleg's side, the treaty starts with the words "We are from the Russian kin..." Istanbul, 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇹🇷. This place is an incredible experience, just the feeling of being on such historical land is amazing on its own. Im so privileged to have brought my kids and give them to share this lifetime experience with me. The history in istanbul alone is another level of happiness 😊 would recommend to anyone

It is so sad that this landmark of world proportions stands abandoned: from one side cemetary from another half finished land works.

In any case, this is a must visit to see the original place, which gave some many names for bridges, gates, and other buildings all across the world.

If you want to visit gates from the other side - from the castle - be prepared to pay in cash 100lira. They dont have a card reader in the 21st century!

One of the main entrances to old Istanbul and part of a larger fort complex it’s well worth visiting. If you like military history then climb up to the roof and you’ll see the layout of the walls below.
