Statue of sultan on horse

Sultan Mehmed II Memorial. It was built in the garden near the Aqueduct of Valens in 1987. Memorial was created by Turkish sculptor Huseyin Gezer (1920-2013). Mehmed II, aka Mehmed the Conqueror (1432-1481), was the man who had accomplished his dream about the Red Apple as he called Constantinople. Without conquest of Constantinople his empire was divided in two unconnected asian and european parts and nobody could guarantee who is going to dominate in Asia Minor, Ottoman or Karamanid Turks, and in Europe, Ottomans or Hungarians and Italians. After that conquest, these questions were solved once and forever. Mehmet took the title of Kayseri Rum or Roman Emperor. That meant the Roman Empire hadn't died but changed religion and culture.
