Aralantepe Archeological Site is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Turkey. This place is an exceptional testimony to the birth of state society. One of the first swords representing power and authority was found in the mound. The first example of public palace was also uncovered here. Its close location to the Malatya city center is another advantage. You can reach Malatya from Istanbul via direct flights everyday. Go and eplore the first emergence of state society here.

Melid ( Arslantepe) located in the Malatya plain, 15 km south-west of the Euphrates River. Archaeological evidence from the site testifies to its occupation from at least the 6th millennium BCE up until the Medieval period. The earliest layers belong to the Late Chalcolithic 1-2 periods, contemporary to Early Uruk in Southern Mesopotamia (4300-3900 BCE) and are characterized by adobe houses. The most prominent and flourishing period of the site was in the Late Chalcolithic 5 period, during which the so-called palace complex was constructed.

Really great. Quiet, free entry (at least when we were there), informative and well described. Highly recommended. Much better than the 150 lira entry to the Göreme open air museum for example!

Very small ruins and most of it was closed anyway. However if you are in Malatya then not a bad place to spend an hour there. It's hardly 10 min drive from Malatya downtown.

I was impressed by the layout for this museum. Firstly, it was free entry (maybe just for Bayram?) but I could not see signs with prices for tickets either. There is a free audio guide, in English, as well. The guard was very helpful and gave us Turkish instructions (we have very basic Turkish) and also offered some brochures and a map of Malatya. Lots of interesting information and it is still ongoing. Plenty more good stuff for the Italians to dig up.

As with many sites this age there isn't a ton to see and much of the somewhat later Hittite era stonework is on display in Ankara's museum of anatolian civilizations. The statues you see are reproductions of what you can see in Ankara. The highlight is definitely the wall paintings which are well worth coming to see.

The first clay palace ever discovered so far.. Can it deserve less? Descriptions places on the site almost enables touring without a guide.
