There's a lot more to say than possible in a review. If you're around stop for at least half a day. Very special place for meditators and followers of Ajan Buddhadasa Bhikkhu.

I highly recommend this temple to all travelers and spiritual seekers, as it embodies the essence of tranquility, cultural vibrancy, and profound spiritual resonance.

A forest temple, Wat Suan Mokkhabalarama was founded by Buddhadasa Bikkhu in 1932. The grounds are massive and cover 120 acres of space, mostly jungle the way it was when originally founded. Suan Mokkh temple is on the west side of the highway, and is sometimes called the "Thai side" of Wat Suan Mokkh. Anyone can go there to walk around, or register to stay in either the male or female dorm there overnight without charge. The sleeping area is concrete and you'll get a pillow and a mosquito net. This is an ideal temple for self-guided meditation retreats. I've spent time here doing so.

If you're not going to stay overnight, you might try walking meditation on the forest paths. There are dogs around some of the monk kutis which are not friendly.

Across the highway on the east side of it is the Suan Mokkh International Dhamma Hermitage - meditation center. This is where the 10-day retreats are held each month for foreigners (1st through 10th of the month), and for Thais the 11th through the 20th of each month. Sometimes over 100 people join the retreat. This is a silent retreat. Very little talking can be done during the 10 days. This is not for everyone. Meals are provided and instruction in English is provided. You should already be able to meditate for an hour or so at a time, and just know that most of the day will be spent in meditation, mindfulness, working, walking, and contemplating the present moment as much as possible. No phones or other electronics. A donation is suggested.

One of the best meditation temples in Thailand. Highly recommended for meditators looking to take it to the next level. If you have any questions, you can contact me through the Jhana8 website. With metta... Vern

A stunning park is surrounding this temple. Very beautiful, all in all. The only thing that disturbed that peace is that highway that runs just outside the temple...it is very busy, as it is the main traffic artery between Bangkok and the south. I assume the monks who live there don't even hear it anymore. 😁

Highly recommend this 10-day Silent Meditation Retreat. It is so peaceful. It is very challenging, yet very rewarding. I believe the costs are around $80-$100 for the entire 11 days meals. You'll be staying in a monastery on a wooden bed with a wooden pillow like a monk...daily chores... complete silence, meditation starts at 4:30am, your day ends around 10pm. Fasting after 11:30am, but WOW this is life changing. If you decide to go (which I hope you do), mentally prepare yourself and commit to completing the retreat. I saw so many people leave because they thought they couldn't handle it but were already many days through! Don't give up!

The place is very special! Quite located in the rest of the forest. Good for a retreat and meditation. You can join any time. Om the first day every month the monks starting retreat in english for 10 days in silence, but beside these opportunity you can join every day at 04:30 am and 06:30 pm for chanting.
The wat use for free but donation are welcomed.
