Very beautiful monument, really lovely area, lots of beautiful nature, it’s a great place to go for a walk and read a book. The monument is very well kept and maintained as is the amazing nature and garden surrounding this area. I would definitely recommend checking it out. There’s lots to do and see in and around this area.

This site is worth visiting though a bit far away from the city centre but there is a good local transport network to reach this site. the entry is free and there is a nice panoramic view of the city.

Located some 16km from the city centre, though entirely within the municipality of Belgrade, at 511 metres Mount Avala earns its title by a scant eleven metres but owing to the surrounding lowlands it still provides beautiful panoramic views of the city and beyond.

The Monument to the Unknown Hero (Spomenik Neznanom junaku) is a World War I memorial located atop Mount Avala, south-east of Belgrade, Serbia, and designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The memorial was built in 1934–1938 on the place where an unknown Serbian World War I soldier was buried.

WWI memorial dedicated to commemorate victims from Balkan Wars and WWI.
The monument was ordered by King Alexander and designed by Ivan Meštrović.
Caryatides represent different peoples of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
The monument is placed on a five step pyramid representing five centuries of Ottoman ocupation of Serbia.
I would definitely recommend visit to Avala mountain, monument and Avala Tower.
The forest is beautiful, as well as the view on the entire surrounding.

Monumental! I remember it since I was a kid! Beautiful work of Ivan Mestrovic, created in period 1934-1938 in a memory of unknown soldier from the World War I.

Fantastic place. Truly underrated. The quality of craftsmanship and the proportions are beautiful. The monument is not bombastic or propagandistic - it is graceful and spiritual. The serpentine drive towards it is on a good quality road through a thick forest. Most recommended.

The monument was built on a place where an unknown soldier from The World War I was found. The stairs leading to the monument are beautifully designed It's located on top of the Avala mountain and it's a monumental piece by famous Yugoslavian sculptor Ivan Meštrović made of black granite in the form of sarcophagus standing on five huge steps. There are eight female figures, caryatids, representing the people of Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but also mothers of the fallen soldiers. The monument is surrounded by trees, apparently donated and brought to Yugoslavia by Adolph Hitler himself. As our guide said, there were no conifers on Avala before.
The monument is located close to Avala tower, so it's a great place to spend some time in nature and visit two places at once.

Very important historical place. Once it was a Medieval fortress Zrnov, later at the beginning of the 20th-century this monument was made. Also, a great viewpoint to Central Serbia. Highly recommended!

A somber and powerful monument on Avala Mountain. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The nearby scenery is beautiful as well and quiet, perfect for enjoying a walk.
