Dom Gancho

After a long day; an early start and a day full of exploring wonderful Porto we were exhausted and hungry. We found D. Gancho on TripAdvisor and as it was nearby and number one we decided to give it a go. We were warmly greeted and seated.

Drinks were served promptly however when we tried to order pizza - the reason for choosing this restaurant in the first place - we were told they had no more pizzas. We were quite disappointed. The waiter explained that as it was a bank holiday weekend the kitchen had made plenty of pizza dough but they had been overwhelmingly busy and had run out of dough. Their dough takes two days to make apparently.

We ordered tasty pasta, a salad and the infamous Porto Francesinha - a crazy sandwich with melted cheese, lots of meats, and a red sauce. Now the francesinha is not my kind of thing but in comparison to the one my husband tried when we visited Porto last year, this one my brother-in-law had was mile's better with good quality ingredients.

After we had finished eating the waiter came along and moved all our plates away from the centre of the table. We had no idea what he was doing until with a smile and a surprise he delivered a pizza for us to share, and on the house! It was delicious!

The meal was tasty and in a lovely venue that was buzzy yet relaxing. And to finish it all off the waiter then gave us all a glass of port. How generous and kind.

Really good Italian Restaurant but please try their's Francesinha a Porto's traditional dish. Really awsome!

Awesome place outside of Porto. Worth the trip for great service and good food. House wine was cheap and tasty. Victor our waiter was amazing and gracious. He gave us a special dessert and made the experience memorable. Well worth going!

Google walking tour took us in a wild goose chase, but glad we stuck it out. Delicious food that hit the spot. Victor, our waiter, was incredible!! (Be sure to ask for him). He recommended items from the menu that we'd never heard of, and he didn't lead us astray. Most tasty!! Our dessert, the pana cata (I may be misspelling this) was the bomb!! Give it a whirl; you won't be disappointed!!

Very friendly family run restaurant. A great mix of Portuguese and Italian cuisine. Finish the meal with a local port :-) Five minutes walk from the Holiday Inn (was Melia) .

The best place to eat the famous Francesinha in the world!!! Try francesinha de massa folhada, that’s the francesinha with puff pastry instead of the regular bread. D E L I C I O U S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
