Gurdwara Rori Sahib - 2 kilometres south-east of Eminabad, an old town is about 55 kilometres north of Lahore and 15 kilometres south of Gujranwala and is a famous town of Gujranwala district in West Panjab, Pakistan. It is linked to Grand Trunk Road and Eminabad railway station by four-kilometres stretch of metalled road. This area has three important historical shrines of the Sikhs - Gurdwara Rori Sahib, Gurdwara Chakki Sahib and Gurdwara Khuhi Bhai Lalo.
Gurdwara Rori Sahib is the sacred shrine which marks the site where, according to tradition, Guru Nanak after the destruction of the town had stayed with Bhai Lalo. Here the Guru had to sit and lie on a hard bed of pebbles (small stones) (ror-ree in Punjabi) as alluded to in Bhai Gurdas Varan.

When the armies of Babar entered Punjab in 1521, Guru Nanak Dev was present in Eminabad. At the time of capture of Eminabad, many locals were arrested, among whom was Guru Nanak Dev Ji. At the time of the arrest, Guru Nanak was sitting on the pebbles and was busy in his prayers. The Gurdwara stands at the place of the pebbles.

An imposing Gurdwara has been built over the place. A large pond and other buildings make it more graceful. A large estate worth Rs.5000 per annum and 9 squares of agricultural land is endowed to the Gurdwara from the era of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Vaisakhi and Kattak Puranmashi festivals used to be held in the past but only Vaisakhi festival is held now where people from Gujranwala and its adjoining areas participate with fanfare.

This was the premier gurdwara of the town. Its central building is a three-storey imposing structure of cut brick work, which is topped with three chhatri-like structures covered with a large central gumbaz (dome) with smaller chhatris (dome-shaped pavilions) on either side. A rectangular hall adjoins it on the left side of the entry. A large sarovar, surrounded with low walls on two of its sides is set askew to the right of the central entry tower. At the rear of the complex there is a room topped with a particularly exquisite ribbed white lotus dome with a circumambulatory verandah. This room covers the pebbled area on which Guru Nanak was arrested.

Before Partition, Eminabad was known for its week-long Baisakhi fair which included largely attended Congregational gatherings of the Sikhs in Gurudwara Rori Sahib as well as the usual fun and a cattle fair. The multi-storeyed building was set on fire by a mob of zealots soon after the partition of the Punjab on 15 August 1947.

The building of the Gurdwara was falling apart but the Government of Pakistan stemmed the rot by constructing its boundary wall at a cost of thousands of rupees.

A very moving place to visit for all Sikhs but all are welcome.
It has been renovated and a new langar hall built.
It has a sarova here but it is not used. They say that it will be refurbished soon.
This is the place where Guru Nanak came on his first pilgrim and was arrested.
There are another two Gudwara here that you should visit also and the Ghani here explains the history.

As a member of the print media team, I recently had the privilege to visit Gurdwara Rohri Sahib in the Sadar Tehsil area of Gujranwala, along with friends, to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi. Our experience at this historical place was truly awe-inspiring and filled with sincerity.

Gurdwara Rohri Sahib holds a special place in the hearts of the followers of the Sikh religion, and it was evident from the moment we stepped foot on the premises. The serene atmosphere, the beautifully adorned walls, and the reverent ambiance of the gurdwara immediately made us feel a sense of peace and spirituality.

The historical significance of Gurdwara Rohri Sahib was evident as we learned about its rich heritage from the knowledgeable staff present there. The gurdwara is believed to be associated with the first Guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who is said to have visited this sacred place during his travels. The sanctity of the gurdwara was palpable, and we were deeply moved by the reverence and devotion of the devotees who were offering their prayers.

The Baisakhi celebration at Gurdwara Rohri Sahib was a truly remarkable experience. The Gurdwara was adorned with colorful decorations, and the atmosphere was filled with joyous chants and hymns. The sight of devotees coming together to offer their prayers and partake in the langar, the community kitchen where free meals are served to all, was heartwarming. We were humbled by the selfless service of the volunteers who were diligently serving the community with love and compassion.

The sincerity of the devotees and the warmth of their hospitality left a lasting impression on us. We were welcomed with open arms and were made to feel like part of the community. The sense of unity and brotherhood among the followers of the Sikh religion was truly inspiring and a testament to the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Our visit to Gurdwara Rohri Sahib was not just a touristic excursion, but a soulful journey that left us enriched and enlightened. We were touched by the deep faith and reverence of the devotees, and we were left with a renewed sense of spirituality and respect for the Sikh religion. We were grateful for the opportunity to experience such a significant historical place and witness the sincerity of the Baisakhi celebrations.

In conclusion, our visit to Gurdwara Rohri Sahib was an unforgettable experience. The historical significance, the sincerity of the devotees, and the spiritual ambiance of the gurdwara left a deep impression on us. We were humbled by the hospitality and warmth of the Sikh community and were inspired by their unwavering faith and devotion. We highly recommend visiting Gurdwara Rohri Sahib to anyone seeking a soulful and meaningful experience.

It's a quiet place. Though there's not much to see but old places always attracts our imaginations. So, visit this if you are close to Gujranwala or on your way to Sialkot.
